26th SESSION UNITED NATIONS: HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL

CENTRE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS AND PEACE ADVOCACY

ITEM 9

By: Awatar Singh Sekhon

Mr President,

Speaking on behalf of Centre for Human Rights and Peace Advocacy (CHR&PA), Dr Awatar Singh Sekhon said that the CHR&PA would like to draw the attention of this august Council (UN:HRC) to the increasing insecurity of racial and religious minorities (non-Brahmins-Hindus-Baniyas-Turbaned Brahmins) of India, following the capture of power in the last parliamentary elections by the Hindu nationalists (fundamentalists and militants), the Bhartiya Janta Party. The Sikhs religious minorities face onslaught of the Indian state when their Holy of the holiest shrine The Darbar Sahib Complex, mistakenly called the Golden Temple Complex, Amritsar) was stormed by the military (armed forces). As such, thousands of the Sikhs were slaughtered in June (Amritsar, PUNJAB) and November, 1984. in Delhi. Despite approaching all the law courts and all the human rights institutions, the India's justice is still a far cry.

Mr President,

Kashmir (Internationally Disputed Areas of the Jammu and Kashmir) continues to be war zone for many years. The racial minorities of North East India are not even recognized in the constitution. And yet, racist laws like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act are still in operation in these areas. The Dalits continue to face Aparthied and discrimination. The Hindus nationalists and fundamentalists forces in power today are going to make the situation worst.

Mr President,

The attack on the civil society has already began with "leaking" of the Intelligence Bureau report slamming the NGOs for retarding the Growth of the Gross Domestic Products of India by 2 to 3 per cent.

The CHR&PA urges this Council to support the struggle to bring down the structures of oppression and discriminations against the non-Hindus-Brahmins-Baniyas-Turbaned Brahmins minorities.

I thank you, Sir.
