Wheat acreage touches 278.17 lakh hectare mark
PULSES SOWN IN MORE AREA THAN LAST YEAR

New Delhi: March 2, 2010.

          Data received from States reveal that about 278.17 lakh ha
wheat has been sown compared to last year's coverage of 275.89 lakh
ha. till date. About 36.58 lakh ha of rice has been transplanted
compared to last year's coverage of 40.77 lakh ha.
till, date which is 4.19 lakh ha less than last year.
           Oilseeds have been sown in less area as compared to last
year, by 3.47 lakh hectare. However, there is a significant increase
of over 6.82 lakh ha area under pulses.
 The cropped areas this year and last year for major rabi crops as on
26th February are as follows:

Community Radio Station to start at Uttaranchal
New Delhi: March 2, 2010.

Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India has signed
a Grant of Permission Agreement for establishing, maintaining and
operating a Community Radio Station at "The Energy Resources
Institute", Disttt. Mukteshwar, Uttaranchal. Letter of Intent had been
issued to the Institute after recommendations of Inter Ministerial
Committee (IMC). The Community Radio Station is expected to be
operational within three months as per the agreement. With this, the
number of CRS will increase to 64 in the country.

The Community Radio Station named "Kumoun Vani" will bring the local
communities on a common platform and enable better communication and
flow of resources between them. This Community Radio Station will
enable them to generate content based on local issues as well as
technical knowledge about operating a radio station. Local
organisations will be invited for content sharing through radio spots
and programmes, music bands or music groups can be invited to play and
create radio jingles. Workshops/seminars sessions can be narrated on
the radio creating awareness, discussions on technique and method to
improve horticulture practice and comments from experts/panel
discussion. Experts from various backgrounds will be invited to
discuss issues related to environment protection, emancipation &
development of society to afford an all-round rapid healthy
development and also to meet the social responsibilities.

The Ministry encourages setting up of Community Radio Stations as it
promises to provide an opportunity to the local communities to express
themselves, share their views and particularly empower the women,
youth and the marginalized groups to take part in local self
governance and overall socio, economic and cultural development in the
area.

Shri P.K. Basu takes charge as Secretary Agriculture & Cooperation
New Delhi: March 2, 2010.

Shri Prabeer Kumar Basu, has taken charge as Secretary, Agriculture &
Cooperation here today. He replaces Shri T. Nanda Kumar who retired
from service on February 28, 2010 on superannuation. Shri Basu is 1976
batch IAS officer of Bihar cadre. He served in various capacities in
the Government of Bihar during his tenure, particularly in Finance,
Industries, Agriculture & Cooperation and Energy.

The central tenure of Shri Basu included postings in the Ministries of
Power and Disinvestment. He was appointed Additional Secretary in the
Department of Agriculture & Cooperation from March, 2007 to November,
2009 before being elevated as Special Secretary in the Ministry from
November, 2009.

Shri Basu has been instrumental in the conceptualization and
implementation of flagship programme of the Ministry of Agriculture,
namely, Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana. He has a special role in the
revision of the Macro Management of Agriculture and drawing up the
guidelines for the National Food Security Mission. Shri Basu also
played a role in the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture to tackle
the severe drought in various parts of the country during 2009 as
Drought Relief Commissioner. Besides agriculture, his area of
specialization includes finance management, industries, power and
energy.

Ministry of Water Resources
Storage of important reservoirs in the country
New Delhi: March 2, 2010.

Central Water Commission (CWC) is monitoring storage position of 81
important reservoirs spread all over the country, of which as many as
36 reservoirs are having significant hydro-power benefits with
installed capacities of more than 60MW each. The combined live storage
in these 81 reservoirs at the beginning of monsoon i.e. 1 June 2009
was 11% of their designed capacity and stood at 36% of designed
capacity as on 25 February 2010. The present storage is 104% of last
year's storage and 106% of last 10 years average storage during the
same period. Out of these 81 reservoirs there are presently 32
reservoirs where this year's storage is 80 % or less than the average
of previous 10 years and in remaining 49 reservoirs the storage is
more than 80% of the average of previous 10 years. In order to derive
the best possible benefits from the available water, Central Water
Commission is keeping in touch with the Department of Agriculture and
Co-operation and providing information of the weekly storage position
to the Crop Weather Watch Group for evolving suitable crop strategies
and also appraising the situation to various Departments and
Ministries involved in Water Resources Planning.

Basin wise storage position as on 25 February 2010 is as follows:

The storage position in Narmada, Cauvery and NEFRs, Mahanadi & NEFRs,
Krishna and West Flowing Rivers of South basins are better than
average of previous 10 years and storage position in Ganga, Indus,
Tapi, Sabarmati, Mahi, Rivers of Kutch, and Godavari basins are
deficient.
Out of 36 reservoirs with significant hydro potential 17 reservoirs
have storage build up less than the average of last 10 years capacity.

Ministry of Minority Affairs
Allocation for 'Pre–matric Scholarship for Minorities' Scheme more
than doubled in next year's Central Budget
New Delhi: March 2, 2010.

The 'Pre-matric Scholarship for Minorities' Scheme of the Ministry of
Minority Affairs has been allocated a sum of Rs. 400 crore in the
Central Budget for the next financial year. During the current fiscal
the scheme had been allocated Rs. 176.99 crore. The proposed
allocation is thus an increase of more than Rs. 223 crore.
Pre-matric scholarship is provided to students from the minority
communities who fulfill the eligibility criteria for studies up to
class X in schools recognized by an appropriate authority.

Allocation for 'Post–Matric Scholarship for Minorities' Scheme
increased by more than Rs. 101 crore in next year's Central Budget
New Delhi: March 2, 2010.

The Central Budget for 2010-11 has proposed to increase the allocation
for 'Post-matric Scholarship for Minorities' Scheme of the Ministry of
Minority Affairs by Rs. 101.71 crore. In the Budget presented to the
Parliament recently an amount of Rs. 234.50 crore has been earmarked
for this scheme, whereas during the current financial year 2009-10 the
allocation is Rs. 132.79 crore.
Post-matric scholarship is provided to those students from the
minority communities who fulfill the merit and means criteria for
studies in class XI & XII levels including technical and vocational
courses and to such eligible students for general courses at
undergraduate and post- graduate levels - up to Ph.D. - in
schools/colleges/institutes/universities recognized by an appropriate
authority.

Ministry of Minority Affairs
Multi-Sectoral Development Programme ( MsDP ) for Minorities in
selected minority concentration districts to get over Rs. 350 crore
more in next year's Central Budget
New Delhi: March 2, 2010.

The Multi-Sectoral Development Programme (MsDP) for minorities in
selected Minority Concentration Districts (MCDs) has been allocated a
sum of Rs. 1,223.20 crore in the Central Budget for the next financial
year 2010-11. During the current fiscal the Programme had been
allocated Rs. 873 crore. The proposed allocation is thus an increase
of more than Rs. 350 crore.

MsDP is a special area development scheme. The objective of the
Programme is to address the 'development deficits' identified by a
baseline survey in the 90 identified districts across the nation
(MCDs) having a substantial concentration of minority population which
are relatively backward.

technical courses of undergraduate and post-graduate level' Scheme of
the Ministry of Minority Affairs Increased by more than 35 % in next
year's Central Budget
New Delhi: March 2, 2010.

The Central Budget for 2010-11 has proposed to increase the allocation
for 'merit-cum-Means Scholarship for professional and technical
courses of undergraduate and post-graduate level' Scheme of the
Ministry of Minority Affairs by Rs. 31.07 crore. In the Budget
presented to the Parliament recently an amount of Rs. 119.82 crore has
been earmarked for this scheme, whereas during the current financial
year 2009-10 the allocation is Rs. 88.75 crore. It is thus an increase
of over 35% in the next fiscal.

Merit-cum-Means scholarship is provided to those students from the
minority communities who fulfill the eligibility criteria of
merit-cum- means for pursuing professional and technical courses at
undergraduate and post- graduate levels in institutions recognized by
an appropriate authority.
