AID & ICJB Volunteers Protest Against Bhopal Injustice
The June7th, 2010 verdict against seven Union Carbide India Limited officials by a Bhopal court has sparked protests all over the world. The world's largest chemical disaster killed 25,000 people and 500,000 injured in Bhopal, the capital city of the state of Madhya Pradesh since 1984 and the toxic residues continue to poison the environment. The disproportionately light sentence of $2000 in fines and a 2 year prison is a travesty of justice and mockery of sufferings of the survivors.
AID chapters across US collaborated with the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal (ICJB) and various organizations to create awareness in the local community and to demonstrate their solidarity with the survivors. Protests and vigils in Boston, New York, Washington DC, San Francisco, Austin and Philadelphia continue to intensify the pressure on the Indian government to take action now.
