This morning's headline here is about the death of over hundred pilgrims at Sabarimala. They were jostling each  other for a glimpse of the Makara Fireball that appears in the forest every year on this auspicious day. It has been established that this fireball is lit by interested parties. But that has not dampened the spirits of the faithful who go to any length to catch a long distance glimpse of the fire and now this tragedy.
Today's paper also reports a woman falling between the train and the platform and losing her hands and legs. She was also on a pilgrimage to Kanjiramattom mosque.
Another news item this morning is that Pope John Paul is on the run up to his beatification. All that is required is a second miracle. The first miracle was the cure of a woman who was suffering from Parkinson's disease. There is also rumor that his woman though has since relapsed. But that has not prevented them from going ahead with the beatification.
Reminds me of Francis Bacon's words ""All superstition is much the same, whether it be that of astrology, dreams, omens, retributive judgment or the like, in all of which the deluded believers observe events which are fulfilled, but neglect and pass over their failure, though it be much more common."
