Saudi king to visit protest-hit Bahrain

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah is set to meet Bahraini officials amid ongoing brutal crackdowns by Saudi-backed Bahraini forces on anti-government protesters in Bahrain.
In his scheduled visit on Thursday, Abdullah will meet Bahrain's King Hamad, Prime Minister Khalifah ibn Salman Al Khalifah, Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifah and other officials in a show of support for Bahrain's ruling regime, Saudi online newspaper Elaph reported on Sunday.
King Abdullah will be the first foreign leader to visit the Persian Gulf country after anti-government protests began in mid-February in Bahrain.
The Saudi King will be accompanied by a high-level delegation including Saudi Arabia's Interior Minister Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al Faisal.
On Saturday, the Shia opposition party al-Wefaq said over 30 holy sites, including 16 mosques, have been razed since the Bahraini government's imposition of martial law last month.
Other reports say over 28 mosques and 50 mourning halls have been destroyed.
In a popular revolution, thousands of Bahraini anti-government protesters have been holding peaceful demonstrations, calling for a constitutional monarchy. The protesters have repeatedly called for an end to the military interference of Saudi forces in cracking down on protests in Bahrain.
In March, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait deployed their troops to Bahrain to reinforce the armed crackdowns on Bahraini protesters.
