Dear Friends,
In the aftermath of the Tsunami, and due to persistent discrimination against Dalits in all relief efforts, we started a hostel - The Sakya Hostel - near Manali New Town on the outskirts of Chennai to provide a home for orphaned Dalit children. This hostel has been a warm and wonderful home for 50 children where they are provided the very bare essentials, namely food, basic clothing and shelter. The children attend a local government school, a very bare-bones school, but do recieve some kind of education. Some of our children after graduating from school have joined engineering colleges and technical institutes.
Today we face a most critical situation. Our principal support used to come from an organisation of British Buddhists - called 'Karuna'(!) - but that has now stopped. Their policy is to help start such ventures and to support them for a few years, but expect them to find other, local, means of sustaining themselves. Our needs are roughly Rs 1500/ a month for a child, which adds up to around 9 lakh rupees a year. Every paisa is used carefully, and I will be happy to take you to our hostel where you can see for yourselves the happiness that pervades the atmosphere. The Sakya Hostel has 80G status, so that your donations are eligible for income tax relief.
I am writing to you to beg your help in sustaining this effort. The alternative is too frightful to even contemplate.
I am also appending an appeal from Jagan, the warden of the Sakya Hostel. Please contact him (his email address appears above), or me, if you wish to help. Please also forward this appeal to friends of yours, especially those who are from Chennai.
       Thanking you,
       Yours sincerely,
       Shiva Shankar.

Dear Sir / Madam

Greetings from Sakya Hostels Children!!!

Sub: We welcome any help in the mode of contributions or voluntary work to support Sakya hostels Children

We would like to thank all your support to Sakya hostels Children during the past year. Visuddhaloka Welfare Association, the organization running the Sakya Hostels (boys & girls) in Manali New Town, Chennai, for last five years from the year of 2005. At present 21 boys and 28 girls is seeking education through this organization.  The children are admitted in the nearby Government school from the hostels and some of our children after graduating from school have joined engineering colleges and technical institutes.

The Sakya hostels had no problem in the beginning, since, as often seen in disaster situation, many organizations came forward to provide humanitarian relief. But most of this relief was short term and devoid of any long term rehabilitation supports. Subsequently, most of these organizations withdrew their support. The main supporter of Sakya Hostels will also be withdrawing its support. Their policy is to help start such ventures and to support them for a few years, but expect them to find other, local, means of sustaining themselves. Today we face a most critical situation.

We believe that without your all generous support it is a great burden for our organizations to run the hostels. So, you too can help Sakya hostels Children by giving your support or If you introduce Sakya Hostels to some people who could support even partially.

You are welcome to the Sakya hostels. We solicit your support to help us to continue this noble task. Even sending Rs. 1650/- per child for one month to fulfill their needs in terms of food, clothing, study materials, stationeries, medicine and any other essential requirements. It will be great help to the bright future of the children. We may bring a big change in the children's life.

We request your Support for Sakya Hostels in what ever way possible.

 Thanking you,
 With metta,
 S. Jayasridhar (Jagan)
