Settle water dispute with India first': Environmentalists!

UN Convention on Watercourses Implementation Movement', an alliance of 15 environmentalist organisations, on Wednesday demanded that the government resolve the water dispute with India on priority basis.

The alliance came up with the demand at a human chain programme formed in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the city.

Speakers at the programme urged the government to make an agreement with India to ensure fare shares of 54 international rivers, including the Teesta, in line with the 'UN Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses-1997' during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to Bangladesh.

They also called upon the government not to sign any eyewash water-sharing agreement sacrificing the interest of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (Bapa) joint secretary Mihir Biswas, Bangladesh Water Keepers coordinator Engineer Sharif Zamil, Teesta River Protection Movement Committee's Firoz Ahmad and Poribesh Unnyaon Society's Borhan Uddin were, among others, present at the human chain. - See more at: http://www.observerbd.com/2015/06/03/92215.php#sthash.ZqOEZkXx.dpuf
