Call today

Hi Romi,

I know we just e-mailed you to say thanks for your response on the BP oil spill. But sadly, I already have bad news to report -- this morning, another drill rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. The Mariner Energy platform, some 200 miles west of BP's Deepwater Horizon, had 13 workers on board when it exploded. Fortunately, the Coast Guard reports that all the workers are alive. Unfortunately, they are reporting an oil slick over a mile long starting to appear around the platform.

I don't know about you, but I am stunned.

I urge you to call the White House at (202) 456-1414 -- when you talk to a live operator, ask the president to ban all new offshore drilling and permanently protect the coasts.

Today's explosion is simply the latest reminder that drilling is inherently dirty and destructive. In the four months since the Deepwater Horizon spill, we've seen:

* An abandoned well in the Gulf that released oil and gas 100 feet into the air and leaked thousands of gallons of oil into nearby marshes after it was struck by a tugboat;

* A massive oil pipeline spill in Michigan that coated the Kalamazoo River with dozens of miles of crude and threatened to pollute Lake Michigan with hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil;

* A spill of petrochemicals into a wildlife refuge in New Mexico from a train;

* An "oil release" from the Trans-Alaska Pipeline in August, when a pumping station shut down.

We have to stop this madness and immediately protect our coasts from any new drilling.

Please call the president today at
(202) 456-1414, and ask him to permanently protect our coasts from new drilling afterwards please let us know you called.
