INDORE: Several people including policemen were injured on Monday when slum- dwellers clashed with security personnel, vandalised government offices and torched vehicles in Indore following the death of a 24-year-old man in a wall collapse.
SHANKAR MOURYA/ HT Riot police confront residents of CP Shekhar Nagar after violence erupted in the locality, in Indore on Monday.
Officials said security forces were forced to lob tear gas shells and cane the mob after they were pelted with stones, which left several policemen injured at the Pandrinath police station.
The mob was demanding registration of an FIR against the Indore Municipal Corporation for alleged negligence, leading to the death of Anil Totaram at CP Shekhar Nagar, a slum situated on the banks of Kahn river.
The IMC has been demolishing houses at the slum after relocating most of its residents to low-cost houses built in another part of the city. However, several families, including the deceased, had refused to shift.
IMC officials, however, later said there was no demolition on Monday and added that the wall which fell on Totaram was demolished by other residents of the slum.
Several people including Adivasi rights activist Madhuri Krishnaswamy were taken into custody by police after the violence.
District collector P Narahari ordered a magisterial enquiry into the death of the man and also announced an ex- gratia relief of Rs 25,000 to the kin. The body was cremated amidst tight security later in the evening.
Police said that trouble started soon after the man died at around 11 am following which slum residents vented their ire on a nearby office of IMC, damaging several vehicles parked there.
According to IMC official Vijay Narole, the mob damaged five vehicles of the civic body including three earth-movers and two dumper-trucks. One of the trucks was set on fire.
Several private four-wheelers and motorcycles owned by IMC employees and parked at the zonal office were also damaged.
The mob then moved to the Pandrinath police station demanding that an first information report be lodged against the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC). When police refused saying they would verify the matter, a heated argument ensued.
Officials said the mob then resorted to stone-pelting at the policemen and also started damaging vehicles parked outside. A motorcycle of a journalist on also set fire.
The situation was brought under control after police dispersed the mob with tear gas shells and a baton-charge.
Superintendent of police (west) Kalyan Chakrabarthy said that they were trying to identify people involved in stone-pelting and arson.
Hemant Parmar, a law officer of the Human Rights Law Network, is also said to be among those injured in the police action. The Indore District Bar Association later demanded action against police for assaulting a lawyer who was in uniform.
