--------------------------------------------------------------------------ACTION ALERT     ACTION ALERT               ACTION ALERT

Dear friends,

We send this urgent Action Alert to you from amidst demolished hutments of Anna Bhau Sathe Nagar, a slum community in eastern suburbs of Mumbai and amidst the unbearable pain and agony of women, children and elders of the basti.

More than 500 hutments were illegally bull dozed and burnt down yesterday at Sathenagar in Mumbai. The Additional Collector Shri Danajay came along with a contingent of more than 250 armed policemen and 6 Bull dozers to demolish more than 3000 houses. The Demolition squad was fiercely resisted and opposed by the slum dwellers, especially the women but the police used force to enter the slum and started the demolition drive. To facilitate that, fire was kindled at atleast 3-4 places. Slum residents lost most of their hard-earned and meager belongings as they had no chance to save the same! 40 slum activists were detained by the Deonar Police and released only later in the night.

In the morning a stay was obtained from the Office of Administrator-Konkan Commissioner and was shown to the Demolition Squad, but they shockingly refused to accept the same and continued with the Illegal Demolition in brutal ways. The authority of the Office of Deputy Collector in issuing the Demolition Notice has also been challenged. The demolition has led to atrocities on the members of the Scheduled Caste community as well.

Given the unholy nexus that exists amongst the builders-bureaucrats-politicians, in Mumbai it would not be surprising if they plan to hand over the land to a private builder soon after this inhuman demolition.

The organization of the basti-dwellers Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan, which is part of the National Alliance of People's Movements demands the concerned authorities to stop the demolition, provide adequate compensation for the losses incurred, help them re-build their houses and a guarantee that there shall not be any forcible eviction until a suitable alternative housing is ensured.

We earnestly request you to support the struggle of the slum dwellers against the un-just and the illegal eviction by writing and calling to the concerned officials at the earliest. Your support would be very critical to the just and peaceful struggle of the people for their basic right to housing and dignity.

In Solidarity,

Santosh Thorat       Jameela Begum   Simpreet Singh     Sumit Wajale      Madhuri Variyath
