I've highlighted in Red the important info to tell your reps and senators. Please make the call. PROTECT our food. This GMO stuff not only contaminates other crops, it is bad for the animals, and we eat them, so it is bad for us, too.
View this alert online Tell Congress to Stop GE Alfalfa Contact Your Representative and Senators Today! Despite overwhelming public opposition, USDA is considering lifting the ban on genetically engineered alfalfa. Approval of GE alfalfa is likely to lead to genetic contamination of organic and non-GE alfalfa, causing economic harm to organic farmers and further reducing all farmers' seed options. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Representative Peter DeFazio (D-OR) are circulating a Congressional 'Dear Colleague' letter in the House and Senate, asking USDA to maintain the ban on genetically engineered alfalfa. Contact your Members of Congress TODAY and urge them to sign onto this letter. Please call AND email your Congressional representatives! Contact Info Call the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Ask to be transferred to your Representative and Senators' offices and ask to speak to the Agriculture Aide. If you're not sure who represents you, click here to find out. Phone Rap "Hi. I am a constituent and I am calling to urge Representative/Senator _________ to sign onto the 'Dear Colleague' letter circulated by Representative DeFazio and Senator Leahy. | Message Subject: Sign the Dear Colleague Letter to Stop GE Alfalfa Dear [Decision Maker], As you may know, Senator Leahy and Representative DeFazio are circulating a Congressional sign-on letter in the House and Senate asking USDA to maintain the ban on Genetically Engineered Alfalfa. Monsanto wants to sell its genetically engineered (GE) alfalfa and wants the USDA to approve its permit application, but consumers, farmers, dairies, and food companies don't want GE alfalfa plants and seeds released into the environment.USDA's Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) admits that if GE alfalfa is approved: * GE Contamination of non-GE and organic alfalfa crops will occur * GE contamination will economically impact small and family farmers * Foreign export markets will be at risk due to rejection of GE contaminated products * Farmers will be forced to use more toxic herbicides to remove old stands of alfalfa Yet, USDA has decided that these impacts are insignificant and have dismissed the concerns of farmers and consumers in our state. As a consumer and a constituent, I urge you to sign on to the Leahy / DeFazio Dear Colleague Letter as soon as possible (You can view the letter here: http://www.nationalorganiccoalition.org/GMO/May2010CongressLetter.pdf). Thank you for your attention to this very important matter. Sincerely,
