India-Syria Agree to Raise Bilateral Trade: Anand Sharma
Second Session of India-Syria JCM Held
New Delhi: June 11, 2010
Shri Anand Sharma, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Mrs. Lamia Marai Aasi, Minister for Economy & Trade of the Syrian Arab Republic, co-chaired the Second Session of the India-Syria Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) in Damascus on 10 June 2010. During the session, Shri Sharma announced that India and Syria have agreed to make concerted efforts to raise the bilateral trade to a level commensurate with the potential of the two countries. Shri Anand Sharma was accompanied by a business delegation from Confederation of India Industry (CII) including captains of industry and major companies.
During the Joint Commission meeting, 'Memorandum of Understandings on Trade Facilitation & Process Measures;' Agreement on 'Exemption of visa requirement for holders of Diplomatic & Official Passports;' and an MOU between Federation of Syrian Chambers of Industry, HOMS, and Confederation of Indian Industry were signed. .
Both sides also agreed to enhance cooperation in various sectors like IT, oil and natural gas, phosphatic fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, processed food products, agricultural machinery, marine transport, and small and medium enterprises for mutual benefit. Leaders of both the delegations underscored the need for greater interaction between the business communities of the two countries and it was decided that both the countries would continue to encourage exchange of visits of delegations and participate in fairs, exhibitions and buyer-seller meets. Shri Anand Sharma said that the two countries also shared common views on most of the multilateral issues. Both the sides also expressed their keenness to cooperate on all matters of mutual interest. .
Shri Sharma also called on the Prime Minister of Syrian Arab Republic, H.E. Eng. Mohd. Naji Otri and the Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Dr. Abdullah Dardari. .

Removal of Invasive Alien Species of Plants
New Delhi: June 11, 2010
The Central Government has introduced a component on "Control and Eradication of Forest Invasive Species" in its ongoing Centrally Sponsored Scheme "Intensification of Forest Management" w.e.f. 2009-10. An outlay of Rs. 30.00 crore had been proposed for the XI Plan period. During the initial years, financial assistance is being provided to the State/UT Forest Departments for carrying out survey of forest invasive species and for preparing a Management Plan. Activities in the Management Plan would include research and eradication of invasive species from forest areas. The steps for physical removal of invasive alien species of plants will be carried out which adversely affects the availability of water and also affects the productivity of land.
