In the latest development in the IPL controversy, it has been revealed that the City Corp's board authorized MD Aniruddha Deshpande to bid on the behalf of the company.
According to the documents shown on CNN-IBN news channel, City Corp's MD Aniruddha Deshpande was authorized to bid on behalf of the company's board approval of the IPL bidding while Sharad Pawar earlier said that Deshpande bid for the Pune team on his own and company's Board was against the move even though it allowed him to use the company's name on bid documents.
Pawar, who is also former BCCI chief, and his Parliamentarian daughter Supriya Sule have been embroiled in the controversy over the bid for the Pune IPL team, which was won by Sahara group, after it came to light that the Pawar family had a 16 per cent equity in City Corp

However,Agriculture Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Friday said no member of his family was part of any Indian Premier League (IPL) team nor had they had taken part in the bidding process.
"No member of my family is involved in any IPL team or in the bidding process or has taken interest in bidding," Pawar told reporters in New Delhi following a media report that he and and his family held 16 per cent stake in one of the bidders for the Pune IPL team.
Pawar said Anirudh Deshpande, managing director of City Corporation, a Pune-based company, had made the bid for the Pune team in his individual capacity.
"The company board had passed a resolution saying that the City Corportaion was not involved in the bid. Deshpande had participated in his individual capacity. The company had no connection with the bid. It is clear from the resolution," Pawar, a former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said.
"The bid was not successful. The bid for Pune team was won by Sahara. The process was over," he said.
Answering queries, he said government agencies were inquiring into IPL finances and "anyone who has done wrong will face the consequences".
"This has nothing to do with cricket or cricketers," he said.
According to a media report, Pawar and his family owned about 16 per cent shares in City Corporation, a Pune based construction company.
Pawar said Deshpande had planned to execute his bid by a different consortium comprising a Mumbai construction company, Maharashtra Cricket Association and others but it was not successful.

Farmers in India became the centre of considerable concern in the 1990s when the journalist P Sainath highlighted the large number of suicides among them. Official reports initially denied the farmer suicides but as more and more information came to light the government began to accept that farmers in India were under considerable stress. On figures there was much debate since the issue was so emotive. The government tried to underplay the cases of farmer deaths, intellectual supporters of the farmers preferred to inflate them. More than 17,500 farmers a year killed themselves between 2002 and 2006, according to experts who have analyzed government statistics. [1]. Others traced the increase in farm suicides to the early 1990s..[2] It was said, a comprehensive all-India study is still awaited, that most suicides occurred in states of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Punjab.[3][4][5][6][7]. The situation was grim enough to force at least the Maharashtra government to set up a dedicated office to deal with farmers distress [2].
In 2006, the state of Maharashtra, with 4,453 farmers' suicides accounted for over a quarter of the all-India total of 17,060, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). NCRB also stated that there were at least 16,196 farmers' suicides in India in 2008, bringing the total since 1997 to 199,132.[3] According to another study by the Bureau, while the number of farm suicides increased since 2001, the number of farmers has fallen, as thousands abandoning agriculture in distress[8]. According to government data, over 5,000 farmers committed suicide in 2005-2009 in Maharashtra, while 1,313 cases reported by Andhra Pradesh between 2005 and 2007. In Karnataka the number stood at 1,003, since 2005-06 till August 2009. In the last four years, cases in Kerala were about 905, Gujarat 387, Punjab 75 and Tamil Nadu 26.[9]. In April 2009, the state of Chattisgarh reported 1,500 farmers committed suicide due to debt and crop failure. [10]

In the 1990s India woke up to a spate of farmers suicides. One of the major reporters of these suicides was the Rural Affairs Editor of The Hindu, P. Sainath. The first state where suicides were reported was Maharashtra. Soon newspapers began to report similar occurrences from Andhra Pradesh.[4] In the beginning it was believed that most of the suicides were happening among the cotton growers, especially those from Vidarbha.[5] A look at the figures given out by the State Crime Records Bureau, however, was sufficient to indicate that it was not just the cotton farmer but farmers as a professional category were suffering, irrespective of their holding size.[11] Moreover, it was not just the farmers from Vidarbha but all over Maharashtra who showed a significantly high suicide rate.[6].[12] The government appointed a number of inquiries to look into the causes of farmers suicide and farm related distress in general. Subsequently Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Vidarbha and promised a package of Rs.110 billion (about $2.4 billion) to be spent by the government in Vidarbha. The families of farmers who had committed suicide were also offered an ex gratia grant to the tune of Rs.100,000 (about $2,000) by the government. This figure kept on varying, depending on how much flak the government was facing from the media and the opposition parties for being uncaring towards the farmers' plight. Such a high figure was ironic considering that the net average income of a family of farmers in this region was approximately Rs.2700 (about $60) per acre per annum. The economic plight of the farmer might be illustrated with the fact that a farmer having as much as 15 acres (61,000 m2) of land, and hence considered a well-off farmer, had an income of just a little more than what he would have earned were he to merely get the legal minimum wage for all of the 365 days of the year. Little wonder that despite government efforts at pumping in more money into the suicide belt the suicide epidemic among farmers remained unabated through 2006-07. The problems of the farmers were quite comprehensive. There was little credit available. What was available was very costly. There was no advise on how best to conduct agriculture operations. Income through farming was not enough to meet even the minimum needs of a farming family. Support systems like free health facilities from the government were virtually non-existent. Traditionally support systems in the villages of India had been provided by the government. However, due to a variety of reasons the government had either withdrawn itself from its supportive role or plain simple misgovernance had allowed facilities in the villages to wither away.[13]

In the initial years when farmers distress came to attract public attention it was said that indebtedness through use of Bt Cotton were the main cause for farmers suicide. Here it is important to notice that in the context of Indian history [14] the moneylender is considered to be a particularly evil person and the farmer an unwitting subject of his machinations. Moreover, in recent times there has been a considerable ideologically driven movement against the use of Bt crops. As a result the initial causes indebtedness and Bt Cotton were easily accepted to be the causes of farm suicides. More detailed research by various investigators like Raj Patel [15], Nagraj.[7].[16], Meeta and Rajivlochan[17], identified a variety of causes that essentially boiled down to this: India was transforming rapidly into a primarily urban, industrial society with industry as its main source of income; the government and society had begun to be unconcerned about the condition of the countryside; moreover, a downturn in the urban economy was pushing a large number of distressed non-farmers to try their hand at cultivation; the farmer was also caught in a Scissors crisis; in the absence of any responsible counselling either from the government or society there were many farmers who did not know how to survive in the changing economy. Such stresses pushed many into a corner where suicide became an option for them [18] At least one study from the Punjab also pointed at the dramatic misuse of agricultural chemicals in farmer households in the absence of any guidance on how to correctly use these deadly chemicals and linked it to the rise in farm suicides wherever farm chemicals were in widespread use. [19]
[edit] Responses to Farmers suicides
Vidarbha was in the media for a spate of farmer suicides in recent years ostensibly because of the falling Minimum Support Price for cotton. The problem is complex and root causes include lopsided policies of the World Trade Organisation and developed nations' subsidies to their cotton farmers which make Vidarbha's cotton uncompetitive in world markets. Consequently Vidarbha is plagued by high rates of school drop outs, penniless widows left in the wake of suicides, loan sharks and exploitation of the vulnerable groups.
The Indian government had promised to increase the minimum rate for cotton by approximately Rs 100 ($2) but reneged on its promise by reducing the Minimum Support Price further. This resulted in more suicides as farmers were ashamed to default on debt payments to loan sharks. "In 2006, 1,044 suicides were reported in Vidarbha alone - that's one suicide every eight hours."[20]
In April 2007 an NGO named Green Earth Social Development Consulting brought out a report after doing an audit of the state and central government relief packages in Vidarbha. The report's conclusions were:
- Farmers' demands were not taken into count while preparing the relief package. Neither were civil society organisations, local government bodies, panchayats etc consulted.
- The relief packages were mostly amalgamations of exiting schemes. Apart from the farmer helpline and the direct financial assistance, there was scarcely anything new being offered. Pumping extra funds into additional schemes shows that no new idea was applied to solve a situation where existing measures had obviously failed.
- The farmer helpline did not give any substantial help to farmers
- The basis for selection of beneficiaries under the assistance scheme was not well-defined. Also, type of assistance to be given led to problems like a farmer needing a pair of bullocks getting a pump set and vice versa (or a farmer who has no access to water sources being given pump sets)
- Awareness regarding the package was also fairly low.
The report concluded quite alarmingly that the loan burden of the farmers would double in 2008.
To attract attention a variety of catch phrases were coined such as 'SEZ' or (Farmers) 'Special Elimination Zone' states. [21].
The government set up a dedicated group to deal with farm distress in 2006 known as the Vasantrao Naik Sheti Swavlamban Mission, based in Amravati [8]

"Summer 2007" by producer Atul Pandey, focused on the issue of farmer suicides in Maharashtra's Vidarbha region, as did the 2009 Bollywood film Kissan [22]. Prior to this "The Dying Fields", a documentary directed by Fred de Sam Lazaro was aired in August, 2007 on Wide Angle (TV series).
In 2006, A documentary by Indian film maker Sumit Khanna titled "Mere Desh Ki Dharti" , did a comprehensive review of the way we grow our food. A well researched and indept understanding of the agrarian crisis, it won the national award for the best Investigative film.
In 2009, the International Museum of Women included an examination of the impact of farmers' suicides on the lives of the farmers' wives and children in their exhibition Economica: Women and the Global Economy. Their slideshow "Growing Debt" and accompanying essay by curator Masum Momaya entitled "Money of Her Own" showed how many widows were left with the burden of their husbands' debts, and were forced to work as indentured servants to repay the debt. The widows were also unlikely to remarry, because other men in the community were unwilling to take on the widows' debts for themselves.[23]
The 2010, award winning film Jhing Chik Jhing is based around the emotive issue of farmer suicides in Maharashtra. It looks at how the farmer has very little in his control and looks at the impact of indebtedness on his family.[24]

Sharadchandra Govindrao Pawar (Marathi: शरदचंद्र गोविंदराव पवार) (born December 12, 1940), popularly known as Sharad Pawar, is an Indian politician from the state of Maharashtra. He is the president of the Nationalist Congress Party which he founded in 1999, after separating from the Indian National Congress. He has previously held the posts of Defense Minister of India and Chief Minister of Maharashtra and currently serves as Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India.
Pawar is from the town of Baramati in the Pune district of Maharashtra. He leads the NCP delegation in the Lok Sabha, representing his constituency of Madha in Maharashtra. He has a prominent place in Indian national politics as well as regional politics of Maharashtra.
Sharad Pawar will become the International Cricket Council (ICC) president after England's David Morgan, who takes the chair next year, according to BBC. [1]
Pawar also served as the Chairman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India from 2005 to 2008.

Sharad Pawar entered the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1967 from Baramati, representing the undivided Congress Party.
Pawar broke away from the Congress to form a coalition government with the opposition Janata party in 1978 becoming the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for the first time at a time when Indira Gandhi had become incredibly unpopular due to her imposition of Emergency in 1975. This Progressive Democratic Front government was dismissed in February 1980, following Indira Gandhi's return to power at the Centre.
In the elections that followed, the Congress party won the majority in state assembly and A.R. Antulay,took over as the chief minister of the state. Pawar took over the Presidency of the Congress in 1981. For the first time, he won Lok Sabha election from Baramati parliamentary constituency in 1984. He also won state assembly elections of March 1985 from Baramati and preferred to continue in state politics for a while and resigned from the Lok Sabha. His party, the Indian Congress (Socialist) won 54 seats out of 288 in the state assembly and he became the leader of the opposition.
His returning to the Congress has been cited as a reason for the rise of the Shiv Sena at that time. In June 1988, Prime Minister of India and Congress President Rajiv Gandhi decided to induct then Maharashtra Chief Minister Shankarrao Chavan into Union Cabinet as Finance Minister and Sharad Pawar was chosen to replace Chavan as chief minister. Sharad Pawar had the task of checking the rise of the Shiv Sena in state politics, which was a potential challenge to the dominance of Congress party in the state[citation needed]. In 1989 Lok Sabha elections, Congress party won 28 seats out of 48 in Maharashtra. In the state assembly elections of February 1990, the alliance between the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party posed a stiff challenge to the Congress. Congress fell short of an absolute majority in the state assembly, winning 141 seats out 288. Sharad Pawar was sworn in as chief minister again on March 4, 1990 with the support of 12 independent MLAs.

During the course of election campaign, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated. There were reports in the media that Pawar's name was being considered for the Prime Minister's post along with those of P.V. Narasimha Rao and N D Tewari.[2][3][4] However the Congress Parliamentary Party elected P.V. Narasimha Rao as its leader and he was sworn in as Prime Minister on June 21, 1991. Rao decided to induct Pawar as Defence Minister. On June 26, 1991, Pawar took over as that portfolio, continuing till March 1993. After Pawar's successor in Maharashtra, Sudhakarrao Naik stepped down, Rao sent Pawar back as chief minister of the state.
He was sworn in as chief minister for his fourth and most controversial term[citation needed] on March 6, 1993. Almost immediately, Mumbai, the financial capital of India and the state capital of Maharashtra, was rocked with series of bomb blasts on March 12, 1993.Sharad Pawar was sworn in as chief minister of maharashtra for first time in 1978 and not in 1979 as stated in the article career till 1990.

The Deputy Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, G.R. Khairnar made a series of accusations against Pawar for being involved in corruption and protecting the criminals[citation needed]. Though Khairnar could not produce any evidence in support of his claims, it inevitably affected Pawar's popularity. Notable social worker Anna Hazare started a fast unto death to demand expulsion of 12 officers of the Forest department of Government of Maharashtra, who had been accused of corruption. The opposition parties accused Pawar's government of trying to shield the corrupt officers. Further, there was a sex scandal at Jalgaon in which a number of young girls were subjected to sexual abuse, which expanded to involve local municipal corporators belonging to Congress. The 1994 Gowari stampede occurred at Nagpur during the Winter Session of Maharashtra State Assembly and killed 114 people. Nagpur Police were trying to disperse almost 50000 Gowari protesters using baton charge but it created panic and triggered stampede amongst protesters[5]. Majority of casualties were women and children who were crushed to death under the crowd's feet scrambling to escape police line. Some were victims of sharp barb piercing as they were climbing over high fence to escape. Allegations were made that the mishap occurred because welfare minister Madhukarrao Pichad did not meet with the delegation of the Vanjara people in time. Though Pichad stepped down owing moral responsibility for the mishap, this incident was another setback to Sharad Pawar's government.
The elections to the Vidhan Sabha were due to be held in 1995. The Shiv Sena and BJP combine was leading the Congress in the polls, and there was widespread rebellion in the Congress party. The Shiv Sena-BJP combine won 138 seats while Congress party retained only 80 seats in the state assembly. Sharad Pawar had to step down and Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi took over as chief minister on March 14, 1995.
Till the Lok Sabha elections of 1996, Sharad Pawar served as the Leader of the Opposition in State Legislative Council. In the 1996 General elections, he won from the Baramati seat and has not returned to the State Assembly since.

In June 1997, he unsuccessfully challenged Sitaram Kesri for the post of Congress President. In the mid-term parliamentary elections of 1998, Sharad Pawar not only won from his constituency, Baramati but also led the Congress to an emphatic win in Maharashtra. His move to align with the Republican Party of India (Athvale) and Samajwadi Party for the elections in the state brought rich dividents and the Congress party and allies won 37 seats out of 48 in the state. Sharad Pawar served as Leader of Opposition in 12th Lok Sabha.
After 12th Lok Sabha was dissolved and elections to 13th Lok Sabha were due, Pawar, P.A. Sangma and Tariq Anwar demanded that the Congress Party needed to project someone born in India as the Prime Ministerial candidate and not the Italian-born Sonia Gandhi, who had entered party politics and replaced Kesri as Congress President.
In June 1999, Pawar and Sangma founded the Nationalist Congress Party. His party had to align with the Congress party to form a coalition government in Maharashtra as neither party could win an absolute majority on its own in the 1999 assembly elections. Pawar, however, did not return to state politics, and Vilasrao Deshmukh of the Congress was chosen as Chief Minister, with Chagan Bhujbal representing the NCP as his deputy. The alliance has endured at the national and state level to this day.
After 2004 Lok Sabha elections, he joined the United Progressive Alliance government headed by Manmohan Singh as the Minister for Agriculture and Food.
On November 29, 2005, he was elected President of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
He was appointed Union Minister of Agriculture and of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution on May 28, 2009
[edit] Allegations of corruption
The BJP asked for Pawar's resignation after alleging he was involved in a multi-crore scam involving wheat imports. In May 2007 a tender floated by the Food Corporation of India for procurement of wheat was cancelled when the lowest bid received was for 263 USD/ton. The government subsequently allowed private traders to purchase wheat directly from farmers that year resulting in a paucity of wheat to stock FCI granaries. By July 2007 the shortage at FCI was large enough to require import of wheat at a much higher price of 320-360 USD/ton. Taking advantage of this, traders who had domestically purchased wheat at 900 INR/ton earlier, were now offering the same to FCI at 1,300 INR/ton.[6][7]
On October 27, 2007, the Bombay High Court served notices to institutions headed by Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar and Sadanand Sule (Sharad Pawar's son-in-law) along with a corresponding notice served to the Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation (MKVDC) on why special privileges were given to Pawar and his family. This was done in consideration of a Public Interest Litigation No. 148 of 2006, filed by Shamsunder Potare alleging that the land said allocations in Pune, made in 2002, were illegal. The institutions and properties mentioned include:
- Two 141.15 acre plots given allotted to Vidya Pratishthan, an educational society headed by Sharad Pawar
- A 2 acre plot allotted to Anant Smriti Pratishthan, headed by Ajit Pawar, the Maharashtra state minister for irrigation and Sharad Pawar's nephew
- A 13 hectare (=32.12 acres) plot allotted to Lavasa Corporation, owned by Sadanand Sule, Sharad Pawar's son-in-law at the time. He handed over his stake in 2006
- A 1 acre plot allotted to Shivajinagar Agriculture College
- A 3 acre plot allotted to Sharadchandraji Scout and Guide Training Institute
These allocations were made allegedly under NCP leader and minister Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar who was in charge of MKVDC at the time.[8][9] Saharad Pawar was served a contempt of court notice on May 1, 2008 in connection with this case for issuing statements to the press even though the matter was subjudice at the time, that was later rejected by the court. Also in connection with the case, the respondents were directed not to create third-party interests in the property under dispute and to undertake any developments at their own risk.[10][11]
Pawar is also listed on the No Criminals website as an incriminated offender of the Religion Institution Act 1988 (Prevention of Misuse).[12]

BCCI President Shashank Manohar today launched a scathing attack on Lalit Modi, accusing him of "tarnishing" the image of the Board and making misleading allegations that interim IPL Chairman Chirayu Amin was part of a failed bid for the Pune franchise. Blasting Modi, Manohar said it was in fact the suspended IPL Commissioner who had advised a Pune consortium to rope in Amin as an investor and the interim IPL chief agreed to invest only after the bid succeeded and he had sought the Board''s permission.Manohar also claimed that contrary to Modi''s assertions, the IPL Governing Council did not know that City Corporation''s Managing Director Aniruddha Deshpande bid for the Pune team in his "individual capacity". "The truth is that it was Mr Modi himself who sent a message to the Pune Franchisees through Mr Ajay Shirke, President, MCA (Maharshtra Cricket Association), asking them to contact Mr Amin and ask him to be a part of the consortium," he revealed.
Manohar said when the bidders approached Amin to join their consortium, the interim IPL chief agreed to make an investment of upto 10 per cent only if the bid was won and he got BCCI''s permission. "Mr Amin had then given me a letter with a copy to the Hony Secretary (N Srinivasan), informing that he has been approached by the Pune franchisee.
"In his letter he clearly states that should City Corporation Ltd win the bid, he would then formally approach the Board for a sanction to invest in the consortium. The letter itself makes it very clear that it was a proposal with a pre-condition attached that Mr Amin would seek a formal sanction only in case the bid succeeds," Manohar said.
Manohar accused Modi of trying to tarnish Amin and the Board''s image. "Mr Modi, since yesterday is trying to malign the image of the Board and M. Chirayu Amin by making statements which are far from the truth," Manohar said.
"It is thus clear that the claim of Mr Modi that Mr Amin was a bidder is misleading and is only to malign the image of the Board and it Members. "I did not react earlier when he made allegations against me and the Hony.
Secretary (N Srinivasan) as I did not wish to dignify his ridiculous allegations with a repartee. Today, I am replying, because he is trying to tarnish the image of the Board and its members," he added.
Coincidence? City Corp chairman has Rosy links with Kochi team
Mehta is also a director in Rosy Blue (India) Pvt Ltd, which is part of a group that has a 12% stake in the Kochi IPL franchise. In fact, an email furnished by City Corp's managing director Anirudhha Deshpande has Mehta writing to him on March 18 from his Rosy Blue mail address: arun.mehta@rosyblue.com .
Rosy Blue, headquartered in Antwerp, is part of the Mehta group, which through a company called Film Waves Combine, holds 12% in the controversial Kochi franchise.
TOI is yet to establish whether this Arun Mehta is the same Arunkumar Mehta who founded Rosy Blue and is its seniormost director. It would appear so, unless by a coincidence, there are two Arun Mehtas in Rosy Blue, both directors.

In what is seen as a dig at its ally Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Thursday warned "secular parties'' against taking the minorities for granted.
Addressing a function organised by the minority cell of his party here, Mr. Pawar said "his was a not a big party with 150 years of experience but some big parties tend to take the minorities for granted in the belief that they would not go along with the Bharatiya Janata Party or Shiv Sena.''
"But if such attitude gains ground among secular parties it leads to ignoring the genuine problems of the minorities. This approach is wrong and if it persists, it will turn away the concerned community.''
Mr. Pawarsaid that Justice Ranganath Misra's report on the religious and linguistic minorities has not been implemented.
The report recommends 15 per cent reservation for minorities in education and employment.
While underlining the initiatives taken by the government to make education and housing more accessible to minorities, Mr. Pawar stressed that implementation should be properly done. "Our job is not done merely by sanctioning funds to States. We have to ensure that they are utilised for the purpose they are meant.''
He said the Maharashtra government, in which the NCP is a coalition partner, has moved a proposal for reservation for minorities in the housing sector.
Asked to comment on Mr. Pawar's observations, chairman of the Congress Media Cell Janardhan Dwivedi said, "We do not comment on our allies.''

BCCI prefers money over nation and national pride
Cricket baiters have often commented that the there is no official 'Indian' cricket team. These critics, often former players and non-cricket commentators, have cheekily suggested that the Indian team, captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, is actually a BCCI (cricket board) team.
Though one staunchly disagrees with this opinion and ascribes it to a possible case of sour grapes, the BCCI's latest action of not deputing a team to the Guangzhou Asian Games later this year, makes one wonder if the anti-cricket brigade is actually right.
The reasons proffered for the refusal seems at times weak and mostly facetious. The official word from the BCCI that it has prior commitment doesn't hold water as India's participation in the Asian Games was known three years back. Though India is scheduled to play New Zealand in a Test series, the dates aren't yet finalised so actually BCCI can make adjustments.
The other reason given relates to the WADA "whereabouts" clause that requires players to inform their availability for dope tests three months in advance. Though the clause is obviously rigid, one can't fathom why our cricketers cannot inform the Board of their whereabouts three months in advance? Even the Prime Minister of India sticks to his schedule!
However, more important than all these reason is the fact that it was India and Pakistan that pushed for inclusion of cricket in the Asian Games calendar. Now that it has been included, India backing out due to the BCCI's rigidity makes it own position weak in the regional power balance. More so, as Pakistan and Sri Lanka have agreed to send teams to Beijing.
The other obvious question that spirings to mind is whether the BCCI has even bothered asking the team if they are keen to play in Guangzhou? Honestly, every athlete's (and here one assumes that cricketers are actually athletes!) ultimate dream is to display their prowess on the Olympic field or in something equivalent.
Since, cricket is still not a part of the Olympics, what better platform than the Asian Games to display the excitement of the T-20 format of the game? When players of far bigger reputation like a Kobe Bryant or a Roger Federer treated glory at the Olympics as bigger than any of their achievements, we can rest assured that someone like a Sachin Tendulkar will no doubt seek to have that one Gold Medal (Asian Games) adorning the walls of his house.
Most of us read about the US Dream team (basketball) landing in Beijing and playing for national pride. Then there was the instance of Federer losing in the singles but coming back and claiming a medal in the unchartered doubles territory at the Beijing Games. It shows how dearly atheletes treasure performances at the international stage.
As noted cricket commentator and writer Harsha Bhogle says,"Indian cricketers need to be sent to Asian Games and Olympics as it teaches humility to the players who share everything with their peers across other games. I recall the commentary by Steve Waugh (former Australia captain) about his experience at the Commonwealth Games and how it humbled him. It is time our cricketers learnt a bit of humility."
Former India captain and India's highest Test wicket taker Anil Kumble too has been quoted in the media today where he speaks of the participation in the Commonwealth Games. "There I watched (Pullela) Gopichand play badminton and also watched the Indian hockey team play, something I otherwise would never possibly look to do. As an Indian player, I would definitely like to play in events like Asian Games or Olympics or Commonwealth Games," Kumble told NDTV on Thursday night.
Probably, the BCCI should learn a lesson or two from Leander Paes who sets aside all his money-spinning tennis schedule to play for India in the Davis Cup.
If the BCCI and the current crop of players are keen to make hay while the sun shines (they get paid Rs 5 lakh per Test), maybe the Board should consider sending a team headed by Sachin Tendulkar and supported by players like Kumble, Dravid and some youngsters who will do well to imbibe the national spirit from the senior statesmen.

The Indian Premier League (often abbreviated as IPL), is a Twenty20 cricket competition initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquartered in Mumbai[3][4] and supervised by BCCI Vice President Chirayu Amin, chairman & commissioner for IPL, and CEO, Sundar Raman. It presently includes 8 teams (franchises) consisting of players from different countries. It was started after an altercation between the BCCI and the Indian Cricket League.[5]
In 2010, IPL became the first sporting event ever to be broadcast live on the popular video sharing website YouTube.[6] It's brand value was estimated to be around $4.13 billion (over Rs 18,000 crore) the same year.[7][8] According to global sports salaries review, IPL is the second highest-paid league, based on first-team salaries on a pro rata basis, second only to the NBA. It is estimated that the average salary of an IPL player over a year would be £2.5 million.[9]

The inaugural season of the tournament started on 18 April 2008 and lasted for 46 days with 59 matches scheduled, out of which 58 took place and 1 was washed out due to rain. The final was played in DY Patil Stadium, Nerul, Navi Mumbai. Every team played each other both at home and away in a round robin system. The top four ranking sides progressed to the knockout stage of semi-finals followed by a final. Rajasthan Royals defeated Chennai Super Kings in a last ball thriller and emerged as the inaugural IPL champions.

The 2009 season coincided with the general elections in India. Owing to concerns regarding players' security, the venue was shifted to South Africa. The format of the tournament remained the same as the inaugural one. Deccan Chargers, who finished last in the first season, came out as eventual winners defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final.

The third season opened in January 2010 with the auction for players. 66 players were on offer but only 11 players were sold. In this season, defending Champions Deccan Chargers did not play at their preferred home location of Hyderabad or Visakhapatnam due to the ongoing political crisis in the region. The new bases for the champions this season were Nagpur, Navi Mumbai and Cuttack. Four teams qualified for the semi-finals. The first semi-final was won by Mumbai Indians who defeated Bangalore Royal Challengers by 35 runs. Chennai Super Kings defeated Deccan Chargers in the second semi-final. The final was played between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. Chennai Super Kings won by a margin of 22 runs.
[edit] Fourth season
On 21 March 2010, at Chennai it was announced that 2 new teams from Pune and Kochi will be added to the IPL from next season. This will increase the number of franchises from 8 to 10 and the number of matches from 60 to 94 if the same format is used. However, the bid around the Kochi franchisee turned controversial resulting in the resignation of minister, Shashi Tharoor from the Central Government and investigations by various departments of the Government of India into the financial dealings of IPL and the other existing franchisees. Later, Lalit Modi was also removed from IPL chairmanship by BCCI.

The winning bidders for the eight franchises were announced on 24 January 2008.[10] While the total base price for auction was US $400 million, the auction fetched US $723.59 million.[11]
On 21 March 2010, Pune and Kochi were unveiled as the two new franchises for the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League. The base price was $225 million. While Pune was bought by Sahara Adventure Sports Group for $370 million, the Kochi franchise was bought by Rendezvous Sports World Limited for $333.3 million. The process was to have been completed on March 7 but was postponed by two weeks after many bidders and the BCCI objected to stiff financial clauses.[12] The second franchise auction fetched total $703 million.

The first players' auctions were held on 2008. The IPL placed icon status on a select few marquee Indian players. These players were Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh, and Virender Sehwag. VVS Laxman initially named an icon player, later voluntarily opted out of his icon status to give his team (Deccan Chargers) more money to bid for players.[13] For the second season, auctions were also held, but free signings taking place in the off-season by franchises led to calls for a draft-like system where the lowest ranked teams would be given a first opportunity to sign players.
[edit] Television rights and sponsorships
The IPL is predicted to bring the BCCI income of approximately US$1.6 billion, over a period of five to ten years. All of these revenues are directed to a central pool, 40% of which will go to IPL itself, 54% to franchisees and 6% as prize money. The money will be distributed in these proportions until 2017, after which the share of IPL will be 50%, franchisees 45% and prize money 5%. The IPL signed up Kingfisher Airlines as the official umpire partner for the series in a Rs. 106 crore (approximately £15 million) deal. This deal sees the Kingfisher Airlines brand on all umpires' uniforms and also on the giant screens during third umpire decisions.[14]
[edit] Television rights
On 15 January 2008 it was announced that a consortium consisting of India's Sony Entertainment Television network and Singapore-based World Sport Group secured the global broadcasting rights of the Indian Premier League.[15] The record deal has a duration of ten years at a cost of US $1.026 billion. As part of the deal, the consortium will pay the BCCI US $918 million for the television broadcast rights and US $108 million for the promotion of the tournament.[16] This deal was challenged in the Bombay High Court by IPL, and got the ruling on its side. After losing the battle in court, Sony Entertainment Television signed a new contract with BCCI with Sony Entertainment Television paying Rs 8,700 crore (US$ 1.94 billion) for 10 years. One of the reasons for payment of this huge amount is seen as the money required to subsidize IPL's move to South Africa which will be substantially more than the previous IPL. IPL had agreed to subsidize the difference in operating cost between India and South Africa as it decided to move to the African nation after the security concerns raised because of its coincidence with India's general elections.
20% of these proceeds would go to IPL, 8% as prize money and 72% would be distributed to the franchisees. The money would be distributed in these proportions until 2012, after which the IPL would go public and list its shares (But recently in March 2010, IPL decided not to go public).[17]
Sony-WSG then re-sold parts of the broadcasting rights geographically to other companies. Below is a summary of the broadcasting rights around the world.
On 4 March 2010 ITV announced it had secured the United Kingdom television rights for the 2010 Indian Premier League. ITV will televise 59 of the 60 IPL matches on its ITV4 free to air channel.[18]

India's biggest property developer DLF Group paid US$50 million to be the title sponsor of the tournament for 5 years from 2008 to 2013.[23]
Other five-year sponsorship agreements include a deal with motorcycle maker Hero Honda worth $22.5-million, one with PepsiCo worth $12.5-million, and a deal with beer and airline conglomerate Kingfisher at $26.5-million.[24]

The UK-based brand consultancy, Brand Finance, has valued the IPL at Rs 18,500 crore (US$ 4.13 billion) in 2010.[25] It was valued at U$2.01 billion in 2009 by the same consultancy.[26]
There are disputed figures for the profitability of the teams. One analyst said that four teams out of the eight made a profit in 2009.[27] While the London Times said that all but Kings XI Punjab made a profit.[28]
In 2010, the IPL expects to have 80 official merchandising deals. It has signed a deal with Swiss watchmaker Bandelier to make official watches for the IPL.[29]

DCI Mobile Studios (A division of Dot Com Infoway Limited), in conjunction with Sigma Ventures of Singapore, have jointly acquired the rights to be the exclusive Mobile Application partner and rights holder for the Indian Premier League cricket matches worldwide for the next 8 years (including the 2017 season). Recently, they have released the IPL T20 Mobile applications for iPhone, Nokia Smartphones and Blackberry devices. Soon it will be made available across all other major Mobile platforms including the Android, Windows Mobile, Palm & others.[30]

In India, the IPL has become one of the most popular events of the year[31]. In the first season, games were played every night (including weekdays) during Indian prime-time and were broadcast live. The IPL was the most watched TV program in India.
IPL drew positive reactions from the rest of the world also. In Pakistan, the reception was described as "massive". Also, there was a huge following for Kolkata Knight Riders.[32] The matches were telecast live in GEO Super. The matches also generated interest in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, despite only one Bangladeshi player being involved. The following in the subcontinental nations was aided by the prime time telecast of the matches as they belong to adjacent time zones.
IPL was also popular among the South Asian population in South Africa and England. The IPL did not garner much interest in Australia and New Zealand. However, in recent times the IPL has gained a much larger fan-base in these two countries.
Snap polls indicated that more than 48 million people watched the telecast of the IPL 2008 final between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, more than 40 million people saw the Rajasthan Royals vs Delhi Daredevils match, whereas the second semi-final between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab attracted an audience of 29 million.[33]
The third season of IPL saw interest rise dramatically in the United Kingdom. This was, in part, due to TV coverage switching to free to view channel ITV4. Previous editions of IPL were aired on the now defunct channel Setanta (pay to view channel), which entered administration in 2009. James Macleod stated, "We are delighted with the viewing figures for the IPL so far. The ratings for ITV4s coverage have been around seven or eight times those achieved by Setanta last year, and we're delighted to be bringing the competition to a wider audience". Lalit Modi, Chairman and Commissioner of IPL, also expressed immense satisfaction on the way IPL has been accepted by the British audience. "ITV beats Sky Sports over the weekend in number of viewers. This is great going. The ITV numbers are double that of rugby league. This is huge by all imaginations. UK figures for viewership on ITV already 10 times that of last year. This is just fantastic news," he said.[34][35]

There are five ways that a franchise can acquire a player. In the annual auction, buying domestic players, signing uncapped players, through trading and buying replacements.[36][37] In the trading window the player can only be traded with his consent. The franchise will have to pay the difference between the old contract price and the new contract price. If the new contract is worth more than the older one then the difference will be shared between the player and the franchise selling the player.[38]
Some of the Team composition rules are:
- Minimum squad strength of 16 players plus one physio and a coach.
- No more than 8 foreign players in the squad and at most 4 in the playing XI.For the 2009 edition franchises are allowed 10 foreign players in the squad. The number allowed in the playing XI remains unchanged at 4.
- As this is domestic cricket so minimum of 8 local players must be included in each squad.
- A minimum of 2 players from the BCCI under-22 pool in each squad.
Some of the differences to international Twenty20 cricket:
- A difference to international cricket is a timeout. It gives the players an opportunity to strategise and take a drink during the strict 2 minutes, 30 seconds time limit. Each team is awarded two timeouts per innings totalling to four timeouts for the whole game. The teams can take the timeout when instructed, but is necessary to take it at the end of 9th and 16th over.
- IPL is also known for having commercials during the game, hence there is no time limit for teams to complete their innings. However, there may be a penalty if the umpires find teams misusing this privilege at their own choice.
The total spending cap for a franchisee in the first player auction was US $5 million. Under-22 players are to be remunerated with a minimum annual salary of US $20,000 while for others it is US $50,000. The most expensive players in the IPL to date are Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen at US $1.55 million each.

The IPL negotiated a contract with the Canadian company Live Current Media Inc. to run and operate its portals and the minimum guarantee has been negotiated at US $50 million over the next 10 years.[39] The official website of the tournament is www.iplt20.com.
Incorporating popular forms of social media into the third season of the IPL, the website now contains a more holistic presence across all online mediums. The website apart from featuring new additions to empower user interaction, has encouraged a wider range of websites around IPL like IPL Tracker [1] and IPL Mag [2] amongst other more traditional reporting websites.

The BCCI had found itself in the middle of many conflicts with various cricket boards around the world as a result of the IPL. The main point of contention was that signed players should always be available to their country for international tours, even if it overlaps with the IPL season. To address this, the BCCI officially requested that the ICC institute a time period in the International Future Tours Program solely for the IPL season. This request was not granted at a subsequent meeting held by the ICC.[40]
[edit] Conflicts with the England and Wales Cricket Board
Because the inaugural IPL season coincided with the County Championship season as well as New Zealand's tour of England, the ECB and county cricket clubs raised their concerns to the BCCI over players. The ECB made it abundantly clear that they would not sign No Objection Certificates for players—a prerequisite for playing in the IPL. Chairmen of the county clubs also made it clear that players contracted to them were required to fulfill their commitment to their county. As a result of this, Dimitri Mascarenhas was the only English player to have signed with the IPL for the 2008 season.[41]
A result of the ECB's concerns about players joining the IPL, was a proposed radical response of creating their own Twenty20 tournament that would be similar in structure to the IPL. The league — titled the English Premier League — would feature 21 teams in three groups of seven and would occur towards the end of the summer season.[42] The ECB enlisted the aid of Texas billionaire Allen Stanford to launch the proposed league.[43] Stanford was the brains behind the successful Stanford 20/20, a tournament that has run twice in the West Indies. On 17 February 2009, when news of the fraud investigation against Stanford became public, the ECB and WICB withdrew from talks with Stanford on sponsorship.[44][45] On February 20 the ECB announced it has severed its ties with Stanford and cancelled all contracts with him.[46]
[edit] Conflicts with Cricket Australia
The BCCI also experienced run-ins with Cricket Australia (CA) over player availability for Australia's 2008 tour of the West Indies and CA's desire for global protection of their sponsors. CA had feared that sponsors of the IPL (and its teams) that directly competed with their sponsors would jeopardize already existing arrangements. This issue was eventually resolved[47] and it was also agreed upon that Australian players would be fully available for the West Indies tour.
[edit] Conflicts with the Pakistan Cricket Board
Many players from the Pakistan Cricket Team who were not offered renewed central contracts (or decided to reject new contracts) decided to join the rival Indian Cricket League (ICL). Two such players—Naved-ul-Hasan and Mushtaq Ahmed also held contracts with English Counties. The PCB decided to issue No Objection Certificates for these players to play with their county teams on the basis that since they were no longer contracted to the PCB, there was no point in not granting them their NOCs. The latter did not sit well with the BCCI, as it went against the hard line stance they had taken on players who joined the ICL.[citation needed]
After the 2008 Mumbai attacks, the Pakistan government deemed it unsafe for its players to travel to India for the IPL. However, when the IPL was shifted to South Africa, the Pakistani players requested the IPL organizers and Lalit Modi to allow them to play but they refused by reasoning that the squads had already been decided and there was no room for Pakistani players.[citation needed]
Recently in the 2010 IPL auction nobody bid on any of the Pakistani cricketers, despite having expressed an interest in them therefore having them put on the auction list. Initially they said that the decision was purely based on cricket , Pakistani team had won the 2009 T20 World Cup. There was speculation that the Pakistanis might have been denied visas, so a team would waste money by recruiting them. After questioning, the IPL board members said that the reasoning behind none of the Pakistani players being selected was simply natural and unaffected by any outside influences.

Smaller boards like the WICB and NZCB have raised concerns over the impact the IPL will have on their player development and already fragile financial situation. Since players from smaller cricketing nations are not compensated as much, they have more motivation to join the IPL.[citation needed]
[edit] Media restrictions
Initially the IPL enforced strict guidelines to media covering Premier League matches, consistent with their desire to use the same model sports leagues in North America use in regards to media coverage. Notable guidelines imposed included the restriction to use images taken during the event unless purchased from cricket.com, owned by Live Current Media Inc (who won the rights to such images) and the prohibition of live coverage from the cricket grounds. Media agencies also had to agree to upload all images taken at IPL matches to the official website. This was deemed unacceptable by print media around the world. Upon the threat of boycott, the IPL eased up on several of the restrictions.[48] On 15 April 2008 a revised set of guidelines offering major concessions to the print media and agencies was issued by the IPL and accepted by the Indian Newspaper Society.[49]
[edit] Conflict with Cricket Club of India
As per IPL rules, the winner of the previous competition decides the venue for the finals.[50] In 2009, the reigning Champions, Deccan Chargers chose the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.[50] However, a dispute regarding use of the pavilion meant that no IPL matches could be held there. The members of the Cricket Club of India that owns the stadium have the sole right to the pavilion on match days, whereas the IPL required the pavilion for its sponsors.[51] The members were offered free seats in the stands, however the club rejected the offer, stating that members could not be moved out of the pavilion.[50][52][53]

There have been wide ranging allegations of betting throughout the tournament. Up to $11 billion was reportedly bet on games throughout the tournament, mainly during the second edition.[54]

On 25 April 2010, the BCCI suspended Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, for "alleged acts of individual misdemeanours". The suspension notice was served on him by Rajeev Shukla, BCCI vice-president, and N Srinivasan, the board secretary, sending an e-mail to the same effect. It followed a day of negotiations with interlocutors attempting to persuade Modi to resign but pre-empted a potentially flashpoint at a scheduled IPL governing council meeting, which Modi had said he would attend. Modi was officially barred from participating in the affairs of the Board, the IPL and any other committee of the BCCI.[55]
[edit] Chirayu Amin named IPL interim chairman
Chirayu Amin, an industrialist and head of the Baroda Cricket Association, was named interim chairman of the IPL by the BCCI, following Lalit Modi's suspension.[56] According to BCCI, many important documents were missing from the IPL and BCCI offices. "Many of the records are missing. The IT is asking for documents. We don't have them. We have asked BCCI CAO Prof Ratnakar Shetty to look into the missing records and papers," said BCCI President Shashank Manohar.[57]

Shashi Tharoor (Malayalam: ശശി തരൂ൪) (born 9 March 1956) is a member of the Indian Parliament from the Thiruvananthapuram constituency in Kerala. He previously served as the United Nations Under-Secretary General for Communications and Public Information and the Indian Minister of State for the Ministry of External Affairs.
he is also known as a prolific author, columnist, journalist and a human rights advocate.
He presently serves on the Board of Overseers of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He serves as an adviser to the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva and a Fellow of the New York Institute of the Humanities at New York University. He also serves as trustees of the Aspen Institute, and the Advisory of the Indo-American Arts Council, the American India Foundation, the World Policy Journal, the Virtue Foundation and the human rights organization Breakthrough. He is also a Patron of the Dubai Modern School and the managing trustee of the Chandran Tharoor Foundation which he founded with his family and friends in the name of his late father, Chandran Tharoor.

Shashi Tharoor was born in London to Lily and Chandran Tharoor. Tharoor studied at Montfort School in Yercaud and Campion School in Mumbai. He attended high school at St. Xavier's Collegiate School in Kolkata and obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from St. Stephen's College, Delhi[1] .
He went on to win a scholarship to study at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University where he earned three degrees in two years:
- A Master of Arts in International Affairs
- A Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy
- A Ph.D.
At the age of 22, Tharoor was the youngest[2] person in the history of the Fletcher School to be awarded a doctorate. His doctoral thesis, "Reasons of State", is still required reading in courses on Indian foreign-policy making.[3][4]

[edit] With the United Nations
Shashi Tharoor career in the United Nations began in 1978 as a staff member of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva. From 1981 to 1984 he served at the UNHCR office in Singapore during the boat people crisis. In 1989 he was appointed as the Special Assistant to the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations in New York. Until 1996, he lead the team responsible for peacekeeping operations in the former Yugoslavia[5].
In 1997 Tharoor was appointed Director of Communications and Special Projects and as Executive Assistant to the Secretary-General Kofi Annan. In January 2001, he was appointed as the Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, and as the head of Department of Public Information (UNDPI). In this capacity, he was responsible for the communication strategy, enhancing the image and effectiveness of the UN. In 2003, the Secretary-General appointed him to the additional responsibility of United Nations Coordinator for Multilingualism[5]. During his tenure at the UNDPI, Tharoor undertook a number of initiatives, ranging from organizing and conducting the first-ever UN seminar on anti-Semitism[6], the first-ever UN seminar on Islamophobia[7] and launching an annual list of "Ten Under-Reported Stories the World Ought to Know About"[8].
On 9 February 2007, Tharoor resigned from the post of UN Under-Secretary-General on and left the UN effective 1 April 2007 [9].

In 2006, Tharoor was nominated by the Government of India for the post of UN Secretary General[10][11][12]. Tharoor came a close second (behind Ban Ki-moon) in each of the four straw polls conducted by the UN Security Council[13][14][15] and won the online poll conducted by the BBC News website[16]. After the fourth poll, Ban emerged as the only candidate with the support of all five permanent members, each of whom has the power to veto candidates. Of the seven contenders for the post, Tharoor remained the only other to enjoy a majority in the Security Council. One Permanent Member (later revealed to be the US under the Bush Administration) opposed and China abstained from voting. After the vote, Tharoor withdrew his candidacy expressing his confidence for Moon to win[17].
Had he been elected, the then 50 year old Shashi Tharoor would have been the second-youngest Secretary-General to be appointed to the post. The first being Dag Hammarskjold who was appointed at the age of 46 years.[18][19]

In February 2007, amidst rampant speculation about his post-UN future, it was presciently reported in the Indian press that Tharoor might be inducted into council of ministers of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as Minister of State for External Affairs.[20] In the same month, it was reported in an American gossip blog that Tharoor was a finalist for the position of dean of the USC Annenberg School for Communication in Los Angeles, though he withdrew his name from consideration at the final stage.[21] Instead, Dr. Tharoor—in addition to a variety of other activities in his private life— became chairman of Dubai-based Afras Ventures, which established the Afras Academy for Business Communication (AABC) in Trivandrum, Kerala, India. He also spoke widely around the globe about India and Kerala, the state where he spent increasing amounts of time before moving for good in October 2008.[22]

In March 2009, Shashi Tharoor contested the Indian General Elections in 2009 as Congress Party candidate from Thiruvananthapuram (Lok Sabha constituency) in Kerala. His opponents included P. Ramachandran Nair of the Communist Party of India (CPI), Neelalohitadasan Nadar of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), M.P. Gangadharan of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and P. K. Krishna Das of Bharathiya Janata Party (BJP)[23]. Despite being criticized as an "elite outsider" he went on to win defeating his nearest CPI rival P. Ramachandran Nair by a margin of approximately 100,000 votes. Subsequently Shashi Tharoor was selected as Minister of State in the Council of Ministers of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. On 28 May 2009 he was sworn in as the Indian Minister of State for External Affairs.
Tharoor's use of his political website (www.tharoor.in) and new media technologies like Twitter quickly earned him a celebrity status. He went on to become the first Indian celebrity to get 100,000 followers on Twitter.[24]. However, some of his tweets (or twitter posts) proved controversial and were quoted by the press and opposition parties to criticize his work. On 18 April 2010 Tharoor resigned from his post as Minister of State for External Affairs on instructions from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh[25], following allegations of corruption and misuse of office to get shares in the IPL cricket franchise of Cochin.
On 2 May 2010, he was nominated to be a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for External Affairs by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar[26].

Tharoor has written numerous books in English. Most of his literary creations are centred on Indian themes and they are markedly "Indo-nostalgic." Perhaps his most famous work is The Great Indian Novel, published in 1989, in which he uses the narrative and theme of the famous Indian epic Mahabharata to weave a satirical story of Indian life in a non-linear mode with the characters drawn from the Indian Independence Movement. His novel Show Business (1992) was made into the film 'Bollywood'[27] (1994). The late Ismail Merchant had announced his wish to make a film of Tharoor's novel Riot shortly before Merchant's death in 2005.
Tharoor has been a highly-regarded columnist in each of India's three best-known English-language newspapers, most recently for The Hindu newspaper (2001–2008) and in a weekly column, "Shashi on Sunday," in the Times of India (January 2007 – December 2008). Previously he was a columnist for the Gentleman magazine and the Indian Express newspaper, as well as a frequent contributor to Newsweek International and the International Herald Tribune. His Op-Eds and book reviews have appeared in the Washington Post, the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, amongst other papers.
Tharoor began writing at the age of 6 and his first published story appeared in the "Bharat Jyoti", the Sunday edition of the "Free press Journal", in Mumbai at age 10. His World War II adventure novel Operation Bellows, inspired by the Biggles books, was serialized in the Junior Statesman starting a week before his 11th birthday. Each of his books has been a best-seller in India. The Great Indian Novel is currently in its 28th edition in India and his newest volume.[when?] The Elephant, the Tiger and the Cellphone has undergone seven hardback re-printings there.
Tharoor has lectured widely on India, and is often quoted for his observations, including, "India is not, as people keep calling it, an underdeveloped country, but rather, in the context of its history and cultural heritage, a highly developed one in an advanced state of decay.".[28] He has also coined a memorable comparison of India's "thali" to the American "melting pot": "If America is a melting pot, then to me India is a thali--a selection of sumptuous dishes in different bowls. Each tastes different, and does not necessarily mix with the next, but they belong together on the same plate, and they complement each other in making the meal a satisfying repast.".[29] (Other quotes in Wikiquote.)

A theatre buff and successful actor in his school days, he played Antony to Mira Nair's Cleopatra in a 1974 production of Antony and Cleopatra[citation needed]. At St. Stephen's in the early 1970s he founded the Quiz Club, which is still in existence; he also revived the Wodehouse Society, which is no longer in existence. Upon election as President of the College Union he relinquished the Secretaryship of the History Society as well as the editorship of the campus humour magazine "Kooler Talk." He was invited by St. Stephen's College to deliver the college's 125th Anniversary Jubilee Lecture in 2005..
He has been an elected Fellow of the New York Institute for the Humanities and a member of the Advisory Board of the Indo-American Arts Council and also serves on the Board of Directors of Breakthrough, an international human rights organization, the Board of Overseers of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, the Board of Trustees of the Aspen Institute, and as an International Adviser to the International Committee of the Red Cross. He also supported various educational causes, including as Patron of the Modern High School in Dubai.
At the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in 1976, he founded and was the first chair of the editorial board of the Fletcher Forum of International Affairs, a journal examining issues in international relations.[30]
Tharoor has twin sons Ishaan and Kanishk from his first marriage to Tilottama Mukherjee, an academic whim he knew from school days in Calcutta. Both attended Yale University. Ishaan writes for Time magazine's international edition in Hong Kong, while Kanishk is an editor at Open Democracy in London. Ishaan has written a wide range of stories, including cover stories on Nepal and the Philippines[31]. Kanishk is a journalist and also a writer of fiction, for which he was nominated for a US National Magazine Award in 2009[32].
Tharoor's second wife Christa Giles is a Canadian national.[33]
[edit] Controversies
- Tharoor attracted public attention for his article 'India's Israel envy'[34] which contained statements sympathetic to Israel. This was subsequently used against him during his contest in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from the Thiruvanathapuram constituency. He refuted the charges by pointing to his long record at the UN on Palestinian issues.
- In September 2009, Tharoor and S M Krishna were accused of staying in luxurious 5-star hotels.[35] Tharoor defended himself, saying that it was because of the delay in his official residence being ready and he only spent from his own pocket for the accommodation.[36] Later on Pranab Mukherjee's request [37] Tharoor and Krishna moved out of the hotels.[38]
- A controversy erupted on a joke in which Tharoor, responding to the question as to whether he would travel in "Cattle Class", replied that he would do so. This remark on Twitter (@ShashiTharoor), the media claimed that he equated the travelling public to cattle and also taunted his party, the Indian National Congress over their austerity drive.[39] It was also reported that Congress may take action against him.[40][41] However this was subsequently resolved when the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pointed out that it was a joke. Tharoor met his party leadership and offered them an explanation.
- Another controversy erupted on Gandhi Jayanti when he said people should be working rather than staying at home, rather than taking a holiday, thereby paying real homage to Mahatma Gandhi.[42]
- Tharoor was in the news again for publicly criticizing the new visa guidelines adopted by the Indian Government in the wake of the gaps exposed by the arrest of 26/11 terror suspects, David Headley and Tahawwur Rana. For this,he was criticized for breaking ranks with the official position of the Government. He later met External Affairs Minister, SM Krishna and explained his position on the issue. The rules were subsequently partly modified.[43]
- In January 2010, Tharoor was reported to have criticized Gandhi and Nehru for their vision on Indian foreign policy by the Indian media. This angered his party, the Indian National Congress. In the wake of this controversy, he released a press release on his website describing the report as "inaccurate" and "tendentious". It said, "irresponsible reporting may briefly gratify a few sensation-seekers in the media, but they do no credit to the need for informed discussion of foreign policy issues in our democracy. India deserves better. So, frankly, do I."[44]
- In February 2010 when accompanying[45] the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on a three-day visit to Saudi Arabia, he said "We feel that Saudi Arabia has a long and close relationship with Pakistan, that makes Saudi Arabia even more a valuable interlocutor for us. When we tell them about our experience, Saudi Arabia listens as somebody who is not in any way an enemy of Pakistan, but a friend of Pakistan and, therefore, will listen with sympathy and concern to a matter of this nature". He was asked whether India expected Saudi Arabia, given their close ties with Islamabad, to help address the terror threat from Pakistan.[46] The remark about Saudi Arabia being a "valuable interlocutor" raised a strong reaction within the Indian political circle.[47] The Pakistani press even went on to report that he had proposed that Saudi Arabia play a mediator's role in improving India's relationship with Pakistan.[48] In response, Tharoor tweeted saying, "An interlocutor is someone you speak to. If I speak to you, you are my interlocutor. I mentioned the Saudis as our interlocutors, i.e. the people we are here to speak to".[46]
- In February 2010, a website called "Keralawatch" published an investigative report which alleged that Tharoor used fake records to enrol his name in the voter's list in Thiruvananthapuram constituency. Tharoor is yet to respond to this issue.[49]
- Lalit Modi published the shareholders details of Kochi-IPL team's franchise owners, Rendezvous Sports World (RSW) group in his Twitter account[50] and also mentioned that he was asked by an influential Union Minister not to get into details of Sunanda Pushkar, who was given a sweat equity of approximately 4.5 per cent of total equity (estimated worth Rs 70 crore) in Kochi IPL team.[51][52] In an official statement,[53] Tharoor denied having made any financial gains from the sale or having pressured Modi in any way. He further accused Modi of trying to delay and discredit the new owners so that the franchise can be re-awarded elsewhere. RSW protested Modi's breach of confidentiality agreement. Sunanda Pushkar also issued a statement denying being a proxy for Tharoor.[54]. Later amidst demands for his resignation from the Union Cabinet by the opposition parties,[55][56] Sunanda Pushkar gave up the sweat equity offered to her by RSW.[57] But IT department stated that she will have to pay income tax on her sweat equity in Rendezvous Sports World even after having given it up.[1] Allegations that this was pay back for denying a request to not issue a visa to a South African model close to Lalit Modi have surfaced, and so have death threats to Shashi Tharoor by the Mumbai underworld.[58] Under severe push from Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee combine, the Congress core committee decided to ask for Tharoor's resignation.[2].18 April 2010 Shashi Tharoor resigned from the post of Minister of State in MEA after being instructed to do so by the Indian Prime Minister. An internet support site was set up by his admirers to collect pledges for the support of Shashi Tharoor on the same day.[59]
