HYDERABAD: Forty-eight hours after Anusha, the B.Com third-year student of Villa Marie college jumped to death in the college premises, the Punjagutta police are yet to arrive at a conclusion on whether the other four students drove her to end her life or was there any other reason.

Meanwhile, an organisation, Dalit Sthree Sakthi (DSS) has alleged that Anusha was being harassed on caste basis, after her friends came to know that she was a Dalit.

Though the police had registered a case under Section 306 IPC (abetment to commit suicide), investigation so far has not led the sleuths anywhere.

"The victim's parents have alleged that a few other students were responsible for her suicide. But we have to investigate the matter thoroughly and can come to a conclusion only then,'' West zone DCP C Ravi Varma told Express.

The police are going through the mobile phone details of Anusha.

The parents of Anusha had alleged that Anusha took the extreme step unable to bear the humiliation by her friends.

Anusha leaped to death from the fourth floor of Villa Marie college campus at Somajiguda on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the Dalit Sthree Sakthi (DSS) has formed a fact-finding committee to go into the details of the case. The team met her parents, relatives, friends and also the police officials as part of their probe.

Bringing in a new twist to the case, the DSS members said that Anusha was a relative of Congress MLA R Varaprasad Rao, a supporter of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. "Of late, his closeness to Jagan and the media attention he grabbed revealed that he is a Dalit. From then onwards, Anusha was being harassed on caste-basis,'' DSS members alleged.

The committee has submitted a report to Home Minister P Sabita Indra Reddy and Additional DGP (Law and Order) AK Khan and urged them to take measures to avoid recurrence of such incidents in future.

HRD ministry seeks details of backlog on SC, ST vacancies in AU

ALLAHABAD: In order to clear the backlog of vacancies and promotion of the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and other backward classes (OBC) categories, the human resource and development (HRD) ministry has asked all the Central universities, including Allahabad University, to furnish a detailed report regarding appointment and promotion of such employees.

The letter comes in wake of a special recruitment drive launched by the department of personnel and training to clear the backlog.

The letter, DO No 19-30/2008-Desk (U), dated October 23, has been signed by RD Sahay, director (CU) of the department of higher education, HRD ministry. the ministry has sought a report about the backlog existing in the vacancies filled in direct recruitment quota in respect of the universities and report about the same under the promotion quota.

The letter mentions the delay over submission of the said report by the authorities of AU which they had to send in July. Following the delay, Sahay has written to vice-chancellor Rajen Harshe and requested him to look into the matter and provide the reports in the prescribed formats.

The ministry has sought details, regarding backlog in direct recruitment of vacancies under group A, B, C and D as on November 1, 2008; number of vacancies advertised and number of backlog vacancies filled. Such information are been asked individually for SC, ST and OBC candidates in AU and other Central universities.

Similarly, the ministry has also asked the information pertaining to backlog in promotion. It not only asks for number of vacancies identified as on November 1, 2008 but also the details of number of backlog vacancies for which the candidates are not available even in the extended zone of consideration.

Now, SC/ST power enggs threaten agitation

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/lucknow/Now-SC/ST-power-enggs-threaten-agitation/articleshow/5210189.cms

LUCKNOW: Power engineers of SC/ST category at UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) have threatened of launching an agitation against corporation management in case it gives a go ahead to promotion of engineers from general category on the basis of basic seniority.

The threat, in what could pave way for a fresh offensive between engineers of the two categories, comes barely a day before the corporation management was about to set up a committee to look into the issue of promotions of engineers from the general category.

The SC/ST engineers under the aegis of UP Power Officers Association, on Sunday said that UPPCL management move to set up a selection committee is against the government order, which had sought for the same two years ago. "The corporation should have informed the state government before taking a decision to set up a committee to promote engineers of the general category,'' said K B Ram, president of the association, in a statement.

The association alleged that the management was working against the engineers of the SC/ST category. In a representation made to CMD, UPPCL, Navneet Sehgal, Ram said that they are forced to stage a demonstration because of wrong move of the corporation. He, however, clarified that the services would not be affected because of the agitation.

The move is all set to widen the rift between the agitating engineers given the claim by the engineers of the general category of their being a harassed lot. The engineers, under the aegis of UP Rajya Abhiyanta Sangh had earlier threatened to strike in case the matter is not solved at the earliest. The association had been citing examples of engineers languishing on one post -- essentially that of assistant engineer, which is also the recruitment post -- for the past 24 years. The situation, the association claimed, had pushed the engineers on the brink of anxiety and disillusionment with the service.
