  •  400 days of struggle at Azad Maidan by displaced pavement dwellers of Zakaria Bander
  • Hundreds to join in solidarity for Rehabilitation and special rehabilitation package for pavement Dwellers

Hundreds of Pavement Dwellers will march to Azad Maidan demanding early settlement of the issues raised by the displaced people of Zakaria Bander.  For the past 400 days the displaced people are on an indefinite Dharna at Azad Maidan demanding proper rehabilitation after being displaced from the pavement of Zakaria Bander.

The pavement dwellers in other parts of the town affected by Mahatama Gandhi Patakranti Yojana will join in solidarity with the struggle as they face the same problem, with a large number of people being declared non eligible for rehabilitation.  According to a study of the Annex II by an NGO, YUVA about 50 -70% of the pavement dwellers will become homeless after being displaced without proper rehabilitation.
 
The pavement dwellers have been campaigning for the past one year demanding hearing of their problems and rehabilitation according to a policy based on the lines of the MUTP policy.  A panel of eminent people including Justice Suresh, Former Justice High Court of Mumbai, Mr. Miloon Kothari, Former UN Rapporteur on Adequate Housing, Ms. Kalpana Sharma, eminent Journalist, Ms. Farida Lambay, Vice Principal, College of Social Work had demanded a review of the rehabilitation policy during a public hearing held earlier on March 9th, 2010.

The Solidarity March will be addressed by eminent leaders from the social and political spectrum and civil society representatives.  Kindly join the March and express your solidarity with the struggling pavement dwellers of Mumbai.
