Peruvian glacier breaks apart causing tsunami

More evidence of global warming in Peru, as Hualcan glacier collapses into lake.

A while back I was writing a lot about melting glaciers, and the skeptics on global warming lambasted my columns claiming that either (a) glacial melting wasn't happening or (b) even if it was, it didn't matter. Today a devastating collapse of a glacier in Peru proves the climate skeptics wrong on both counts.

About 200 miles to the north of the capitol of Lima, a massive chunk of ice more than 1/3 of a mile long plummeted from the Hualcan mountain into an adjoining lake, causing a 75-foot tall wave to strike the lake's shores.

At least three people were swept into the lake, and a nearby water processing plant was destroyed. Peru is home to 70 percent of the world's tropical ice. According to recent studies, steady increases in winter temperatures could mean that all the ice could be gone in Peru by the middle of the century. Several glaciers — like Chacaltaya — have already completely disappeared.

Here's my list of the top 7 most rapidly melting glaciers. And you can watch the Top 5 disappearing glaciers on Planet 100:
