Adviser sees inflation easing in two months

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Inflationary pressures in India's economy will ease in a couple of months, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of the planning commission, said on Friday.

A pick up in the economy has seen a rise in inflation with the headline number poised to breach 10 percent in March, for which the data is due on April 15, above February's 9.89 percent.

The Reserve Bank of India, citing inflationary pressures and an improving economy, hiked key rates by 25 basis points last month and is expected to raise the rates again by atleast quarter of a percentage point at its policy review on April 20.

Kat Faces Sonia Sting!

Kat Faces Sonia Sting!

By movietalkies
Thursday Apr 8 12:19 AM

The political whip has started cracking. And expectedly, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi hasn't taken to it too lightly. Reportedly, Mrs. Gandhi stonewalled a Press Meet of 'Raajneeti' at New Delhi leaving director Prakash Jha rather red faced!

It's been alleged that Madam Gandhi's sycophants alerted her that Katrina Kaif's 'look' in 'Raajneeti' has been acutely modelled on the Congress politico, including her basic sari styling.

Jha… all excited to present viewers with his premier glimpse of 'Raajneeti' realised that… there was a ban on 'Raajneeti' events in public places! Finally, the event had to be convened indoors in a Gurgaon hotel on the outskirts of Delhi!

"I would like Soniaji to see my film," urges Jha in a tabloid chat. "She will know the truth."

It has been very Hot Discussion all over the last Week as the Kolkata Daily Commuters happen to be indulged Neck Deep in new found IPL Bengali Nationality stimulated by Dada Saurabh Ganguli`s Current Form. Sharukh Khan and IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi has Declared that they would dance Naked provided Kolkata Knight Riders reaches the Final. The Final Venue would then be shifted to Kolkata. Suppose it happens which is Never Impossible in this Betting IPL scripted like any other Reality Show with worldwide audience available for Brand Endorsement. It has been amusing that I foretold the result of every match during last week. Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings eleven and Deccan chargers won unexpectedly to set the Equation so Wild Ideal for IPL betting.

Meanwhile, Shashi Tharur Involvement with unknown Investors of Kochi team and entry of Sahara India in the Cricket Circus have Exposed the Swiss Bank political Accounts involved in the Betting Money.Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today said it was time to revisit some of the age-old financial sector norms to usher in the next wave reforms in the sector.

At the International Convention, organised by Association of National Exchanges Members of India (ANMI), Pranab Mukherjee, Finance Minister said, the year 2009-10 started with difficult challenges and the global financial meltdown was strong. "The economy witnessed a significant slowdown in the growth rate in the second half of 2008-09 following the financial crises that began in the industrialised nations in 2007 and spread to the real economic sector across the world."

However India, he said, stood up with challenge and took necessary monetary and fiscal measures. The subsequent recovery of the Indian economy not only understood the effectiveness of the policy response, but also the resilience of our institutional structure, he added.

Indian economy, he said, grew at about 7% in 2009-10, which was quite impressive by global standards. "I am hopeful that the growth rate will climb back to between 8.25% and 8.75%, and perhaps at the midpoint around 8.5% in 2010-11."

On the other hand, Government is ready to consider changes in the controversial Civil Nuclear Liability Bill including replacing the word 'cap' relating to compensation in case of accidents, which has come under attack from the opposition.

Strongmen like Narendra Modi, Tharur, Lalu, Sharad Pawar, Rakesh Shukla, Arun Jetly are the Heavyweights behind the Curtain with Exposed Skin of Cheerleaders as well as Bollywood, Tollywood with so many Gods and Icons at the stake even not to mention the Mandira Bedi element.Ironically, this CASINO IPL Political Economy is not limited in live Telecast or the real match. It is the Free Market democracy Showcased in the World on Fire!Mind you,The worst-ever Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district will "not determine" the government's strategy of dealing with the "most serious threat" to internal security, Indian government sources have said.

"Some of the financial sector norms are nearly 50-years old. It is high time we made changes for effective financial sector norms, to be in tune with the dynamic need of the market. It is time to clear cobwebs to provide a firm foundation to usher in the next wave of reforms in the financial sector," said Mukherjee addressing a convention organised by the Association of National Exchanges Members of India (Anmi) here today.

In the present complex market conditions, more transparency was required to reduce systemic risks.

While presenting the 2010-11 Union Budget, the government had announced the setting up of an apex-level Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) to strengthen and institutionalise the mechanism for maintaining financial stability.

Mukherjee clarified there would be dilution of power of the existing regulators, which "were doing a good job in the current scenario".

He further said the government had decided to set up an apex level council for macro-level prudential supervision of the economy, including functioning of large financial conglomerates and address regulatory coordination issues.

"We need more transparency in the capital market to reduce systematic risk while we need to encourage more financial products on exchanges for trading which will help the real sector reduce risk," the finance minister said.

Meanwhile, speaking at another event in the city, Mukherjee enumerated the incumbent United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government's priority was to ensure that the economy broke through the double-digit gross domestic product (GDP) growth mark while safeguarding the interests of the common man. "We are not happy with just statistical growth. Rather, we want inclusive growth," he said.

The economy would achieve a GDP growth rate of 8.5 per cent in 2010-11, Mukherjee said.

Adding that the access to jobs, food, education and healthcare facilities was a necessity nationwide, Mukherjee said, "But, these entitlements must be backed by legal provisions. We have already provided the right to information and elementary education. We are now working on the right to food through appropriate legislation."

To meet the Maoist challenge, the sources said, the Centre and and states would have to make coordinated and sustained efforts.

"The prime minister has said that naxalism is the most serious internal threat to the country," they said.

However, "one incident cannot determine our strategy," the sources said while referring to the Dantewada incident in which 75 CRPF personnel and one Chhattisgarh state policeman were killed a few days back.

They made it clear that use of air force to target Naxals was not an option although its support could be taken in respect of air surveillance and movement of personnel.

Government realises that administration and development would have to be improved in Naxal-infested areas. However, for this to happen, violence would have to end, the sources said.

The sources also denied that Maoists were getting external support, saying there was no proof in this regard.

However, they have been trying to tap international arms markets in South East Asia without much success.

Reacting to a suggestion by former solicitor general Soli Sorabjee that the word 'cap' should be replaced with 'norm', sources said this can be done but "in a democratic way".

The sources said there were "misapprehensions" on certain counts on the Bill which could be addressed by sending the proposed legislation to the Standing Committee of Parliament.

"If some bits need to be improved, including raising the cap, it can be done," they said.

Opposition parties like the BJP and Left parties have opposed the bill, saying the cap of Rs500 crore was low.

The sources explained that there was no cap on compensation and the Rs500 crore figure mentioned in the bill was for insurance purposes and to ensure immediate liability without the victim having to prove an accident.

They said the provision of Rs500 crore as compensation has been incorporated in view of the Bhopal incident. The victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy were not given compensation for many years.

"This liability is besides others like criminal liability," they said. Criminal liability takes many years because it has to be established that some thing wrong has been committed.

On concerns raised on foreign suppliers being allowed, the sources said there will be a separate contractual agreement between the supplier and operator.

They said there is a quick provision of payment of compensation. They also pointed out there was no cap on the total compensation that can be made available to victims.

The bill will allow victims to access international funds under the Convention on Supplementary Compensation.

It also provides for liability in case of incidents which have trans-border ramifications.

BJP leader wants strong action against 'pro-Naxal' JNU students!

A senior BJP leader today demanded strong action against the "pro-Naxal" students in JNU who had held a meeting to oppose the government's operation against Maoists.

Leader of opposition in Delhi legislative assembly VK Malhotra alleged that the university has become a "haven of intellectuals supporting Naxalite violence."

In a statement, he also urged home minister P Chidambaram to remove the "elements supporting the Maoists" from the prestigious university.

JNU Forum Against War On People, a group of students who are against the Centre's policies towards Naxals, had organised a meeting in the university last evening to oppose the government's operation against Maoists.

Radiation victims critical, bone marrow damaged

The condition of five people who were exposed to radioactive material Cobalt 60 at a scrap market here is very critical and their bone marrow is significantly damaged, their doctors said on Saturday.

Scrap metal dealer Deepak Jain suffered severe burns and is battling for life at the Indraprashtha Apollo Hospital while four others -- Gaurav, Rajendra Prasad, Ramjee Yadav and Ram Kalab -- have been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Trauma Centre.

"We are investigating the patients and several tests have been conducted on them. They may need bone marrow transplants but confirmation of this will only emerge in a day or two," a senior doctor at the AIIMS Trauma Centre said.

A senior official at the Indraprashtha Apollo Hospital said that Jain continues to be in a critical condition since the day of his admission.

"We are keeping a close tab on his health and have been updating atomic energy experts of the government of India," the official said.

The radiation was caused by exposure to radioactive material Cobalt 60. It is a hard, brittle and shiny metallic element found associated with nickel, silver, lead, copper and iron ore. It resembles nickel and iron.

The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) had received information from the Indraprashtha Apollo Hospital that Jain, who owns a scrap metal shop in Mayapuri, was showing symptoms of suspected exposure to radiation.

Jain's body turned black after he touched the material, according to eyewitnesses.

The Crisis Management Group in the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) was activated and a team of officers from DAE and AERB was sent to New Delhi with a wide range of radiation monitoring and detecting equipment for prompt identification and recovery of the radioactive pieces and their safe disposal.

On its visit to the site, the team monitored the radiation levels at various positions at the scrap shop and in the adjoining areas.

"Such materials are used in industry for radiography, nucleonic gauges for thickness measurement and in medical applications," a DEA official said.

The source of radiation was located and was then shielded with locally available steel scrap to reduce the radiation level in the surrounding. The area was then sanitised.

RDA to contest SEBI's ULIP ban on 14 insurance companies

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) on Saturday said it will challenge, in a legal forum, market watchdog Securities and Exchange Board of India's order banning 14 life insurers from selling unit linked insurance products (ULIPs).

"Policyholders of the unit linked insurance products offered by different insurance companies are assured that these policies are safe and secure and the matters arising out of the recent orders of the SEBI will be addressed expeditiously in the appropriate forum in accordance with the law," the IRDA said in a statement released here.

The 14 companies banned by SEBI are Aegon Religare, Aviva, Bajaj Allianz, Bharti AXA, Birla Sun, HDFC Standard, ICICI Prudential, ING Vyasa, Kotak Mahindra, Max New York, Metlife India, Reliance Life Insurance, SBI Life Insurance and TATA AIG.

ULIPs constitute nearly 90 per cent of the sales for many private life insurers. The industry average is around 85 per cent.

Suman, bowlers keep Deccan alive

The Bulletin by Jamie Alter

April 10, 2010

Text size: A | A

Deccan Chargers 139 for 4 (Suman 55, Symonds 27*, Ashwin 2-13) beat Chennai Super Kings 138 for 8 (Raina 52, Harris 3-18) by six wickets

Deccan Chargers continued to climb up the points table by beating Chennai Super Kings comprehensively by six wickets at their "home" venue in Nagpur to draw level with Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders and the losing side. The win was set up by their bowlers, after MS Dhoni decided to bat on a scorching afternoon, who restricted Chennai to 138, allowing the batsmen to chase at a comfortable pace despite two early jolts and the sapping heat. Deccan struggled against spin initially, losing three wickets to the slow stuff, but rode on another fifty from T Suman and Andrew Symonds' cool head to seal victory with five balls to spare.

The only bit that really went right for Chennai was the toss, which Dhoni won and had little hesitation in choosing to bat. When Chennai accelerated from 21 after three overs to 55 for 1 from six it seemed a run-fest was on the cards. As it turned out, Chennai had little to celebrate thereafter. In the eighth over, M Vijay called for a suicidal second run and that momentary brain freeze changed the complexion of Chennai's innings. It was another example of the schizophrenic series he's had, with aborted starts amid some match-winning knocks, and from there Deccan never let the initiative slip.

From 65 for 2 in eight overs, Chennai slowed down to reach the half-way stage at 74 for 2 with Symonds and Pragyan Ojha keeping a check with stump-to-stump bowling. Chennai's predicament had been brought about by their batsmen's urge to dominate and as wickets fell around him, Suresh Raina began to improvise cleverly. He moved to leg to clip the ball fine and walked down the pitch to upset the bowlers, but also reined in his attacking instincts, knocking the ball in the gaps during the middle overs. Gilchrist put down a tough chance when Raina was 27 and he broke a 38-ball period without a boundary by stepping out and launching Ojha for a straight six and repeated the shot to Symonds in the following over. Raina struggled to keep a partner at the other end, as Michael Hussey pulled Symonds to deep midwicket and S Badrinath fell for 6.

Advantage Honours even

When Raina fell for 52, Chennai only had 122 on the board with 16 deliveries to go and no recognised batsman to follow. Deccan never allowed matters to slip their grasp as Harmeet Singh stymied runs and Ryan Harris returned to pick up wickets in the last over. In a team which had more experienced names in their bowling line-up, the hero of the innings was Harmeet, who bowled with excellent control, changing his pace and offering the batsmen no width to score off. His dismissal of Matthew Hayden with his first ball, drawn into a drive, and final two frugal overs were a blow to Chennai's hopes of getting a challenging total on the board.

A target of 139 meant than Chennai had to strike early to have any chance of a successful defense. The very impressive R Ashwin's dismissal of the Deccan openers in the fifth over, with lovely traditional offspin, gave Chennai a sniff but Suman emphasised how crucial his presence at No. 3 was with a sensible innings. Against Bangalore two nights ago, Suman had batted aggressively because Deccan where chasing 185 but today he focused on staying at the crease.

He reigned in the big shots and along with Symonds -after Rohit Sharma fell to another aerial shot outside off stump - he stablised the innings, allowing himself to gain confidence against spin. Suman chipped Shadab Jakati for four and swung Raina for six, Symonds launched Jakati down the ground for maximum to negate the pressure, and the equation came to 49 from 36 balls. Dhoni had to turn to Sudeep Tyagi for his first over, the 15th, and Suman greeted him with four and six to cross fifty, the striking point being the use of a straight bat and clean swing. He fell with 32 needed from 24, a task which Symonds made sure was accomplished without too many jitters.

Deccan's win means the match to follow tonight will break up the tie between Kolkata and Bangalore.

Maoist menace: States not backing Chidambaram

Posted on Apr 10, 2010 at 19:08

New Delhi: Union Home Minister P Chidmabaram on Saturday confirmed that he indeed offered to resign in the wake of the Dantewada massacre, but also added that it was now a closed chapter.

"CRPF is under my charge. The tragedy happened under my watch. Therefore I said the buck stops at my chair," said Chidambaram.

But that doesn't mean the Home Minister believes the buck stop at his desk alone.

"That does not mean that the state governments have no role, they have a role," he added.

But the chief ministers of Maoist-affected states with whom he needs to work closely with are not making his job easy. After West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, it is the turn of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to hit out at the Home Minister

Nitish suggested to Chidambaram that the Maoist menace demands a holistic policy.

"Too much talk is not good. Work has its own impact," said Nitish.

But as the blame game goes on, there is no let-up in Maoist violence. Now the bloodshed has shifted back to another theatre of war in West Bengal where two people were shot dead mercilessly in Jhargram as the Maoists suspected the duo to be police informers.

For the first time Chidambaram has admitted that he had resigned after the Dantewara massacre. But the fact remains that even the states are responsible and the Maoists are taking advantage of those shortcomings to persist with their campaign of violence.

India 2nd in auto market after China

NEW DELHI: While the global car market shrank, India's auto industry displayed its resilience and strength, racing past several developed markets to emerge as the world's second-fastest growing light vehicle market, second only to China and ahead of Germany, France, Japan and the US.

The government's economic revival package gelled well with the country's low car penetration, stable economic growth, new model launches and lower interest rates to increase the footfalls at showrooms and keep the demand ticking.

According to data released by industry body SIAM, the light vehicle market — that comprises passenger cars, utility vehicles, multi-purpose vehicles and light commercial vehicles — grew 27.5% in India in 2009-10, faster than Germany (23%), Brazil (11%), France (11%), Italy (-0.2%), UK (-6%), Japan (-9%), US (-21%) and Russia (-50%).

China was the only market to have grown faster than India as light vehicle sales there grew 42%, especially after the government reduced vehicle tax by 50% in January 2009. Overall, the world light vehicle market contracted by 14%, registering its worst sales in eight years. The yearly growth rates for all the other markets are based on 2009 calender year basis, SIAM said.

Light vehicle sales in India were driven by a rapid 25% growth in demand for passenger cars.

Retail, corporate borrowings surge

By Saikat Das

With the economy gaining momentum, both companies and individuals are clearly borrowing more. The growth in non-food credit nudged the 17%-mark for 2009-10 (uptil March 26, 2010) crossing the 16% target set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In all, scheduled commercial banks lent Rs 4.62 lakh crore during the year to corporates and retail borrowers. The rise in total credit for the year was around 16.75%. There has been a pick-up in credit over the last 15 days; at the end of the fortnight ended March 12, 2010, the increase in non-food credit had just crossed 16%. Of course, a spurt in both deposits and loans towards the end of the year is not uncommon as banks close their balance sheets for the fiscal year. R K Bakshi, executive director, Bank of Baroda, said, "A fair amount of short-term lending has been seen in March and that could have pushed up credit growth further. We are reporting a 20% credit growth in 2009-10." The total credit outstanding with borrowers stood at Rs 32,40,398 crore at the end of March 26, 2010. With the business environment clearly improving, bankers expect the demand for credit to increase by 20-22 % this year. This was indicated by M V Nair, CMD, Union Bank, after bankers had met Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor D Subbarao on Monday. S Sridhar, CMD, Central Bank of India, said his bank had posted a growth of around 20% in loans last year and expected that this would be higher at around 22% this year. However, O P Bhat, chairman, State Bank of India (SBIN.NS : 2106.1 +10.2) (SBI), has observed that while customers were borrowing, the demand was still somewhat subdued. "We are targetting a growth of around 20% in our assets, this year," Bhat said.

HSU Kamat, executive director, Canara Bank, confirmed that retail borrowers and smaller corporates are looking for money. "There are more individuals borrowing now and we are seeing a smart pick-up in loans to the SME segment and we have lent around 30% more this year to that space," he said. Kamat observes that Canara Bank has also seen a sharp rise in lending to the infrastructure space, of 50% last year. B A Prabhakar, executive director, Bank of India, which too has been able to grow its loan book by about 20%, believes that banks would have access to liquidity this year and even if interest rates rose, they would be able to pass it on to borrowers, because demand for credit was picking up. Despite several banks, including Bank of India, IDBI Bank (IDBIBANK.NS : 0 0), Union Bank and ICICI Bank (ICICIBANK.NS : 978.3 +17.2) raising interest rates on deposits in February, the increase in deposits (time and demand) has been 17.02% year-on-year to Rs 44,86,573 crore at the end of March 26.

At the end of the previous fortnight, the growth in deposits was just over 18%. Central Bank's Sridhar believes that companies are also able to access overseas markets. In its last monetary policy, the RBI had lowered its credit growth target for the sector in the current fiscal to 16% from 18%.

In a surprising development, though some banks have raised their deposit rates in recent months, the overall deposit growth has fallen during the fortnight ended on March 26.However the banking industry has seen a steady growth in credit off-take in recent months. IPL Betting - Kings XI Punjab vs Mumbai Indians

Posted by IPLBet | Under IPL Betting Friday Apr 9, 2010

Today's IPL match sees a clash between the top team in the table and the bottom team in the table, as Mumbai look to bounce back from their 24 run defeat to the Chennai Super Kings. Punjab have been glued to the bottom of the table for almost the whole tournament, and have only pride to play for now that they cannot qualify for the semi-finals.

Mumbai are the favourites for this match, priced at 8/13 (bet $130 to make $80 profit), while the Kings are at 11/8.

Mahela Jayawardene is favourite to be the top scorer for the Kings, priced at 11/4, with Shaun Marsh next at 3/1. Their captain Kumar Sangakkara is at 7/2, and Yuvraj Singh is at 4/1. Yuvraj has generally been disappointing this season, but gave a taster of his awesome hitting power last match, when he smashed 28 from 16 balls, with three sixes.

Following their loss last weekend, Mumbai have been criticised for relying on Sachin Tendulkar too much, and they collapsed after he retired hurt last match. He is priced at 15/8 to be top batsman for the Indians today. Sanath Jayasuriya is at 9/2, and JP Duminy is a 5/1 shot.

IPL Betting - Rajasthan Royals vs Kings XI Punjab

Posted by IPLBet | Under IPL Betting Wednesday Apr 7, 2010

The Rajasthan Royals host the lowly Kings XI Punjab in the first of today's IPL matches. Rajasthan were beaten at the weekend despite scoring 223, as the Chennai Super Kings had already posted an IPL record total of 246!

However, they will still be glad not to be in the same position as the Kings, who are currently propping up the other teams at the bottom of the table. They have only won two of their nine matches, and their season looks certain to end in disappointment.

Rajasthan are favourites for the match, priced at 4/5 (bet $50 to make $40 profit), while the Kings are at 11/10.

New Zealand opener Shaun Marsh is favourite to be top batsman for the Kings, priced at 3/1, followed by Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, who are at 7/2 and 4/1 respectively. Punjab's most famous player, Yuvraj Singh, has been in disappointing form so far this season, but is priced at 9/2 to turn it around and make the top score today.

Shane Watson is favourite to top score for Rajasthan after his performance at the weekend. He is priced at 11/4, ahead of Michael Lumb and Ojha who are both at 4/1. Yusuf Pathan is at 9/2.

The Kings are understandably huge underdogs to win the title, priced at 66/1, whilst the Royals are a more feasible 9/1.

IPL 2010 Betting

The 2010 Indian Premier league will be the third season of the IPL and will return to Indian soil after the 2009 season was held in South Africa. The competition's homecoming will be welcomed by local fans and a return of the big vociferous crowds will be a major positive for the players and the competition as a whole. The volume of IPL 2010 Betting will also increase as a result as the renowned Indian punters get six weeks worth of IPL fixtures to wager on. Deccan Chargers are the defending champions after victory in South Africa last summer where many of the more experienced players flourished on the slower South African wickets. The Indian crowds and pitches will present a different challenge entirely but does that mean we will have different victors? Only time will tell.

Delhi Daredevils, Chennai Super Kings and Deccan Chargers are vying for favouritism in the IPL 2010 Betting with the Daredevils shading it with most bookmakers, the trio are available at around the 5/1 mark. Bangalore Royal Challengers and Rajasthan Royals are available at 6/1, with Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians all available in various places at 8/1. The proximity of each teams odds shows just how close the battle for this year's title could be.

IPL Team by Team Betting

Delhi Daredevils

Captained by Gautam Gambhir and led in the batting by Virender Sehwag, David Warner, Tillakaratne Dilshan and AB de Villiers, Delhi has one of the most fearsome batting attacks in the IPL. They have added Wayne Parnell to a bowling attack which already contains Ashish Nera, Amit Mishra and Dirk Nannes meaning it is no surprise that their well rounded team tops the IPL 2010 Betting with many online betting firms.

Chennai Super Kings

Chennai have Matthew Hayden, the 2009 top tournament run scorer amid their ranks as well as compatriot Michael "Mr Cricket" Hussey. They are captained by India's number one man MS Dhoni who brings a wealth of experience to proceedings and he also has the knowledge and knowhow of Muttiah Muralitharan and Makhaya Ntini to consult with should things get really heated. Jacob Oram and Albie Morkel are their big-hitting all-rounders who often prove very handy with either bat or ball when called upon.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Bangalore are English cricket's most prominent representatives containing two of England's most talented Twenty20 cricketers. Eoin Morgan was bought in this year's IPL auction and joins Kevin Pietersen and New Zealand's Ross Taylor as big hitting batsmen that bowlers will fear in this year's IPL. Jacques Kallis, Roleof van der Merwe and Cameron White are also big hitting all-rounders who add to the power and clout of the Royal Challengers side, when they hit top form they are capable of chasing down any total set. The world number one test bowler Dale Steyn leads the line of attack with ball in hand.

Deccan Chargers

The 2008 wooden spoon winners improved dramatically to become the 2009 winners and will be hoping for another successful year in 2010. Captain Adam Gilchrist was the catalyst for success after he himself put in a player of the tournament winning performance. He was aptly supported by the runs of Herschelle Gibbs and the wicket taking antics of RP Singh and Pragyan Ojha, those looking for a safe bet will look to Deccan Chargers in the IPL 2010 Betting.

Kings XI Punjab

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara captains Kings XI Punjab but the figure head of the team for the fans is the crowd favourite Yuvraj Singh. Anyone who can hit six sixes in one over was always going to be adored by the Indian fans in this format of the game and a hat-trick with the ball in last year's event showed that he is more than useful when both batting and bowling. Shaun Marsh and Mahela Jayawardne add to the batting power that this side possesses whilst Brett Lee strikes fear into opposing batsmen with ball in hand.

Rajasthan Royals

Shane Warne may be long since retired from international cricket but his performance in the 2008 IPL showed that he is still a potent force within the game. He both captains and coaches the Rajasthan Royals and is ably assisted in both on-field and off-field decisions by South Africa captain Graeme Smith. After winning the 2008 IPL they failed to make the semi-final stages but will be hoping that a return to India will re-ignite their challenge. Michael Lumb and Dimi Mascherenas are the franchises English duo but could find themselves being used sparingly throughout.

Mumbai Indians

Being led by India's greatest ever cricketer brings great expectations, expectations which neither Sachin Tendulkar nor Mumbai have been able to live up to in the two IPL's to date. The owners have splashed the cash on Kieron Pollard in this year's auction and will be hoping that his renowned big hitting capabilities can power them to glory this year. If he along with the likes of JP Duminy, Harbhajan Singh and Lasith Malinga can play to their best they could prove to be a profitable option in the IPL 2010 Betting.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Twenty20 specialists Chris Gayle, Brandon McCullum and David Hussey had made the Kolkata Knight Riders many people's favourites for the inaugural 2008 IPL but for one reason or another they have failed to deliver in both IPL seasons and have yet to make it past the group stages. They will be hoping that the signing of Owais Shah will add stability at the top of the order and that Ishant Sharma can use experience gained in the last 12 months to tighten things up with the ball.

Reliance finds more gas in KG basin - sources

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Indian energy major Reliance Industries (RELIANCE.NS : 1124.7 +18.15) has found natural gas in four more areas in its field off the country's east coast, two sources with knowledge of the matter said on Friday.

The company, India's largest listed firm with interests including oil and gas exploration, refining, petrochemicals and retail, has informed the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons about the discoveries in the Krishna Godavari (KG) basin, the sources said.

Reliance, controlled by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has sought permission from the regulator to further develop the fields, said the sources, who declined to be named as they were not authorised to speak with the media.

Reliance is unable to hit peak gas production at its D6 block in the KG basin due to customers not buying allocated volumes and a lack of pipeline infrastructure, Executive Director P.M.S. Prasad said on Tuesday.

The company is producing 63-64 million standard cubic metres a day (mmscmd) of gas from the block, he said. Gas output was slated to reach a peak of 80 mmscmd by April.

Details about potential reserves in the new finds were not immediately available.

In April last year, Reliance started pumping gas from its find in the KG basin. The find, India's largest, is expected to almost double the energy-hungry nation's output when production peaks to 80 mmscmd.

Reliance shares closed up 1.8 percent on Friday, while the Mumbai market rose 1.2 percent.

IPL: Kochi ownership issue solved

Lalit Modi
NEW DELHI: The owners of the Indian Premier League newest team, Kochi, submitted the ownership records to the BCCI after reports had emerged that the Indian cricket board is considering the cancellation of the Kochi franchise following reports of 'secret owners' in the franchise.

The owners of the newest team met the BCCI officials in Mumbai. The members of the Kochi franchisee were in the city to submit their documents and papers to clear all speculation over their bid being cancelled.

However, the Kochi officials are confident that they can resolve the issue and complete all formalities by Monday (April 12).

Earlier, reports had emerged that IPL would probe into the ownership of Kochi after learning of its 'secret partners'. Commissioner of the IPL, Lalit Modi, has denied reports of a probe into the Kochi franchise ownership issue.

Modi has now asked the media to ignore all such rumours and stated that the contract will be finalized soon. He said the delays are only due to the consortium agreement and not the franchisee agreement. However his statements will not lay to rest the entire controversy.

Reports emerged that the Kochi IPL franchisees had run into trouble with the BCCI shortly before they were scheduled to field their team in next year's IPL Season 4. IPL sources claimed that the BCCI had returned the agreement papers after discovering that the Kochi franchisee reportedly gave 25% of its shareholding for life to some unknown entities, free of cost when it has itself bid almost Rs 1,500 crore to obtain the franchise.

The sources also had claimed that the consortium was asked to present its case and sign the agreement, mentioning all its partners, in Mumbai by Monday.

However, sources in the Kochi camp subsequently denied that any such transfer of stake had taken place. They also insisted that they would submit the agreement papers to BCCI on Friday itself.

A BCCI official even said that this 'free equity business' would have to be investigated and that is why the Kochi teams agreement has been returned.

The CEO of the Kochi franchisee, Shailendra Gaikwad, however, denied any such differences with the board saying that he is not aware of such an event.

Maruti invests Rs 290 cr on new WagonR

By Agencies

The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India said it has invested Rs 290 crore in upgrading its hatchback WagonR that will be rolled out from a new platform with a new engine by end of this month.

The company has stopped producing the 'Duo' variant of the existing WagonR, which has both petrol and LPG mode.

"This (new WagonR) is not a minor change, but a full model change. So, lot of investment have gone for it. We have invested about Rs 290 crore for upgrading the model," Maruti Suzuki India Executive Officer (Marketing and Sales) Mayank Pareek said.

Vendors have also put in money for the project, which is additional from the company's share, he added.

Pareek said when the company does a minor facelift of any model, it costs about Rs 50 crore.

When asked about the LPG variant of the existing WagonR, Pareek said, "As of now, we have stopped the Duo and the new WagonR will only be in gasoline."

Introduction of other variants in different fuel modes will be decided depending upon response from the customers.

Currently 'Duo' contributes about 20-22 per cent of total WagonR sales, which stands at 10,000-12,000 units a month.

The new WagonR will have a Bharat Stage IV emission norms compliant K10B engine. It will be produced from the company's Gurgaon facility.

"The new WagonR is based on a completely new platform and it has a new transmission also," Pareek said, adding according to Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) standards, the car will give a mileage of 18.9 km per litre of petrol.

The company will at first sell the car in the domestic market and later introduce it in the neighbouring nations.

Maruti Suzuki India has sold about 8.5 lakh units of WagonR since its launch in 1999.

Asked about domestic car market scenario, Pareek said, "Interest rate is a big concern as about 70 per cent of total passenger cars sold is financed. We are waiting for the RBI's policy review this month."

The rising commodity prices, especially that of steel, is also a major issue that is bothering all the carmakers, he added.

The company has already hiked the prices twice in the last two months due to rise in excise duty, upgradation of engines for new emission norms and input costs.

"As of now, we are absorbing the pressure, but don't know how long we will be able to (hold another round of price increase)," Pareek said.

With the auction process for 3G services that began on Friday, India has taken a giant step towards revolutionising its telecom services.

The 3G technology enables the transfer of high-speed data applications through mobile phones. Theoretically, a data download speed of 2 Mbps becomes possible, though the actual download speed depends on various factors like the number of subscribers in a region.

Two days after the auction process for 3G spectrum ends, the government will initiate the process of auctioning spectrum for broadband wireless access (BWA) services. BWA is primarily used for high speed data services when a subscriber is stationery. The technology is best-suited for rural areas, with lower subscriber-base. BWA offers data download speed of up to 80 Mbps.

In India, the telecom regulatory authority of India (TRAI) has defined broadband as Internet access at a speed of over 256 kbps. Prior to 3G, such high speeds were possible only through wireline networks. Less than five per cent of India's population has wireline phones, while nearly 50 per cent owns mobile phones.

"3G will help in increasing broadband penetration," said R.S.P. Sinha, former CMD of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL). "BWA, however, is a more effective way of providing broadband in rural areas."

"The government should develop backhaul network so that high-speed internet access can be provided in rural areas," said B. K. Syngal, senior principal in Dua Consulting. "Otherwise 3G will remain focused only in the urban areas, at the most in 15 to 20 cities."

At present the government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) and MTNL are the only two 3G service providers in India. BSNL has services in 360 cities and has close to one million subscribers. MTNL provides services in Delhi and Mumbai and has close to 2.5 lakh subscribers.

For operators, the introduction of 3G technology is an opportunity to increase revenues. "3G services will enable penetration of data services and it will have a multiplier impact on the economic growth," said Sanjay Kapoor, CEO, Bharti Airtel (BHARTIARTL.BO : 308.05 -4.75):

"In next two years, 3G may account for about 15 per cent of the revenues of a telecom operator," Prashant Singhal, telecom industry leader, Ernst & Young.

Topless Cheers for IPL BEER Casino Extended from Drawing Room, Footpath to Parliament!Laggards Kings XI Punjab will continue their quest to salvage some pride and make life difficult for second-placed Delhi Daredevils when they clash in their return match of the Indian Premier League on Sunday.

On a roll with four straight wins, Delhi were brought to earth by the Kolkata Knight Riders in their last match and Gautam Gambhir's men have to make sure that there are no more hiccups from here on or else there semifinal hopes might be in jeopardy.

The last time these two teams clashed, Gambhir had smashed a 54-ball 72 to help Delhi beat Punjab by five wickets but things might be a little difficult this time considering, Punjab have already derailed Mumbai's campaign on Friday. With semi-final hopes dashed and nothing at stake, Punjab will be doubly lethal and they would be look to win the rest of their matches to restore some pride.

Punjab's campaign has been plagued by inconsistency and controversies, especially involving explosive batsman and former skipper Yuvraj Singh. The stylish left-hander has been in pathetic form and even though he has got starts, he has not been able to convert them.

Considering the Twenty20 world cup is round the corner, Yuvraj will look to strike form. Among their other batters, Sri Lankan duo of Mahela Jayawardene and skipper Kumar Sangakkara could not make much of an impression in at least the first half of the event.

However, Sangakkara's match-winning 56 against Mumbai last night must have given him some confidence and the left-hander will look to use that when he captains his side on Sunday. Punjab, who have won just three matches against Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and table-toppers Mumbai Indians, Irfan Pathan and Piyush Chawla have been the highest wicket-takers.

Back from injury, Australia's Brett Lee has so far failed to make an impact, while S Sreesanth has been making news more for his temperamental behaviour then his bowling. In contrast, Delhi boasts of a formidable batting.

With David Warner and Virender Sehwag opening and Gambhir coming next, they have the right mix of aggression and caution. Among the bowlers, spinner Amit Mishra has been their wrecker-in-chief with 14 wickets so far, while Farveez Maharoof who has played just six matches, has supported him nicely scalping eight wickets.

Ashish Nehra, who has recovered from a rib injury, is also expected to play and swell Delhi's pace attack.

IMF's Strauss-Kahn: high public debt "tremendous" challenge

CAMBRIDGE, England (Reuters) - IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn said on Saturday that public debt in the advanced economies is set to increase significantly and reversing the rise would be a "tremendous" challenge.

Speaking at a conference, Strauss-Kahn also said the global economic recovery is still sluggish and uneven and needs continued policy support in many advanced economies.

He said public debt in the advanced economies is forecast to rise by about 35 percentage points on average, to about 110 percent of gross domestic product in 2014.

"Reversing this increase will be a tremendous challenge -- let alone reducing debt below pre-crisis levels, which may be needed to leave enough fiscal space to tackle future crises."

Strauss-Kahn said the global economy now appeared to be on the path to recovery.

"Though it remains sluggish and uneven, and in need of continued policy support in many advanced economies. Moreover, the costs of the crisis -- low growth, high unemployment, and sharply higher public debt -- will take many years to overcome," he said.

Greece says has not asked for activation of EU/IMF aid mechanism

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece has not asked for the activation of an EU/IMF aid mechanism but considers that ongoing talks to detail how it would work are important, the government's spokesman said.

"Greece has not asked (for) the activation of the mechanism," spokesman George Petalotis told Reuters.

Euro zone officials agreed on Friday on the terms of a possible financial rescue for Greece and euro zone finance ministers, the European Central Bank and the European Commission will hold a teleconference on Greece on Sunday.

"It is an important step to detail the terms of the mechanism," Petalotis said.

Win has kept us in the hunt
Shane Bond, Friday, April 09, 2010

The boys did a great job against Delhi Daredevils on Wednesday and the win has kept us in the hunt for a semi-final berth. We now have a couple of tough away games, and both are massively important starting with Saturday's one against Bangalore. After that, it's Chennai and we cannot afford to lose if we want to be in the box seat.

One of the positive things about our win on Wednesday was our fielding and catching. Sourav's run out of Gambhir was fantastic, but if we had not taken our chances things could have been very different. Though Collingwood and Gambhir had already fallen, it was only after Ashok Dinda took out Karthik that we knew we had the match.

Dinda bowled an excellent first spell and I am really pleased for him. I am not used to not playing but the most important thing is to get the right team together for the pitch we are playing on.

We have another formidable batting line-up to face in the Royal Challengers. They started out as the team to beat but are going through a patchy time at the moment. We beat them earlier but now we play them in their backyard.

They know their home conditions and it is going to be tough as both of us will be looking for a win, especially after they lost to Deccan on Thursday. And there is no way anyone can take a line-up that includes Kallis, Dravid, Pietersen, Utthapa, Kohli and Cameron for granted. The latter is a big hitter and be it the Big Bash in Australia or Champions League T20, he has a great ability to hit big.

RCB are very ably led by Anil Kumble, who still has 'IT'. He is so competitive, leads from the front and will be one of the danger bowlers for us. Steyn, too, can be a handful and has some serious pace.

The Chinnaswamy is the same ground that Brendon McCullum hit that unbelievable unbeaten 158 in the inaugural match of Season One. I did not see it but read about it in the papers the next day. He is just a fantastic Twenty20 player and it would be magical if he did it again!

Another of my mates, Taylor, plays for Bangalore. We have faced each other many times at nets but it will be strange to face each other from across the divide. I'd love to get his wicket, as long as it's before he scores too many runs!

I'm sure there's going to be some friendly banter and it'll be interesting to see who comes out on top. I think this is going to turn out to be one hell of a match! (Gameplan)

Peaking at the right time critical
Steve Waugh, Thursday, April 08, 2010

In any sport, success in a league format is about winning at the right time. And unlike other leagues, the IPL also has a semifinal-final format, which makes peaking at the right time even more critical.

From this point of view, both Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings are admirably placed. The latter lost four games in a row, but have made up by winning their three home games. Rajasthan Royals has been riding on the genius of Shane Warne, the arrival of Shane Watson and the good form of Michael Lumb.

The team is managing to be making a habit of winning from impossible situations, and are looking like the form team at the moment. Both Royal Challengers and Deccan Chargers seem to have lost steam in the last week, and by the time you read this, one of these two teams will have a lot to worry about.

The lack of a proper window for the foreign players has added a new dimension to the IPL. Shane Watson for example has made a great impact for Rajasthan, while Chennai's bowling has become steelier with the inclusion of Doug Bollinger.

Teams who defeated Chennai easily two weeks ago, now have to factor in Bollinger - this adds to the challenge and makes adaptability a very important factor. It also gives teams who have a strong Indian contingent a big edge.

This makes Mumbai, who have Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan seem most stable. They have a stable core to the team, and the main strength of the team is drawn from the Indian players.

In fact, their big signing Kieron Pollard has been a non-starter so far. He is a quality player who holds a lot of promise, but so is Phil Jacques. The fact that the former was bought for big bucks shows that the talent scouts might have not got it right with him. Fortunately for the team, a certain Sachin Tendulkar has ensured that they have not suffered greatly as a result of this.

There are many players in international cricket or its fringes who are hungry and eager to prove themselves. Shane Watson in season one was one such example, and he went on to be player of the series. Ross Taylor was similar last year and somebody like Amit Mishra shows similar hunger this time. These are the best players to pick for a side.

In this regard, I would once again say that Rajasthan and Kolkata are the two teams that really give young players a chance. It might not always work, but it is worthwhile in the long run. Yesterday, Ashok Dinda was magnificent as was Abdullah the young spinner. These are the players you can fall back on if your superstars have a setback, so it is worthwhile to give them a game every now and then. (Gameplan)

Kings XI won because they had nothing to lose: Gayle

Kolkata: Kings XI Punjab were not under pressure as they were already out of semifinal contention and that helped them in their run chase in the Indian Premier League match here on Sunday, Kolkata Knight Riders opener Chris Gayle said.

"Kings XI had nothing to lose and there was no pressure on them. They played freely. It was very disappointing to lose this game," Gayle, who hit a 42-ball 88 in KKR's 200 for three after the home side opted to bat, said.

"200 in any ground was a good total. But you cannot take away the fact that they (Kings XI) batted well. You have to give them the credit. It was a very crucial loss for us," he said.

Having lost their fifth match out of nine, KKR now have a tough task ahead to qualify for the semifinals, but Gayle said his side would be positive in the remaining five matches.

"We have been doing wonderful job with the ball. This was just one-off game. We have to be positive going into our next game. It will be an uphill task from here on. We have five more matches to go and most likely we have to win all of them. But in T20, anything is possible," he said.

On his knock, he said, "It's good to be back among runs. I started a bit slow but the captain (Sourav Ganguly) was batting really well that really took the pressure off me. After Ganguly's dismissal I had to take the charge."

Asked whether the dropped catch of Jayawardene was crucial in the outcome of the match, Gayle said, "This is cricket and such things (dropped catch) can happen to anyone."

Vehicle sales seen at record high for 2nd year

By Sanjeev Choudhary and Devidutta Tripathy

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Vehicles sales are expected to reach a record high for the second year in a row in 2010/11, as rising incomes in a rapidly growing economy boosts demand.

"If we don't get any major surprises ... we expect a growth of 10-15 percent for the industry," Pawan Goenka, president of Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), said on Friday.

India, whose economy is projected to expand 8.5 percent in the 2010/11 year that started on April 1, is one of the few regions in the world where demand for automobiles has been rising in double digits.

In China, the world's biggest auto market, sales of passenger cars grew by almost two-thirds last month as buoyant consumer sentiment bolstered spending on big-ticket items in the world's third-largest economy. But growth is seen slowing from the current quarter.

In India, sales of vehicles -- including cars, utility vehicles, trucks, buses, motorcycles and scooters -- jumped an annual 26.4 percent in 2009/10 to 12.3 million units, SIAM data showed.

That surpassed the previous record of 10.12 million vehicles sold in 2006/07, before the global financial crisis halted the rise in the following year.

Car sales are expected to rise on an improving economy and motorcycle makers are increasing capacities in anticipation of increased demand, especially in the popular 100cc segment.

Sales could also get a boost from companies such as General Motors, Ford and Volkswagen, all of whom have launched their new compact cars in the past three months.

Sales of passenger vehicles, which include cars and utility vehicles, are expected to rise to 4.5 million units by 2015/16, Goenka said, when the total value of the auto industry would be worth $145 billion.

"For this we need to grow at 16-17 percent annually," he said.

Passenger vehicles sales raced 25.6 percent in 2009/10 to 1.95 million units, SIAM said.

Rising commodity costs, possible increase in taxes, hardening interest rates and new emissions norms pushing vehicle prices higher were the risks for the industry, Goenka said.

Maruti Suzuki, India's largest car maker and a unit of Suzuki Motor Corp, and utility vehicle leader Mahindra & Mahindra raised prices this month, citing higher costs from Euro IV emission norms.

In March, the central bank raised interest rates by 25 basis points and economists expect further hikes as the government battles to quench inflationary pressures.

Analysts expect sales in this quarter to be subdued as customers contend with higher vehicle prices and fuel costs.

"In the April to June quarter, sales are usually tepid and this time with most of the purchases being crowded in January, February and March, we do not expect much sequential growth," said Surjit Arora, auto analyst with Prabhudas Lilladher.

MARCH SALES

Car sales in India rose an annual 20.1 percent in March, with customers advancing purchases ahead of price hikes.

Auto firms jacked up prices from April 1 due to new emission norms-related expenses and rising raw material costs.

Domestic firms sold 155,600 cars in March, compared with 129,585 units a year ago, .

Sales of trucks and buses, a barometer of economic activity, rose 61.2 percent to 67,362 units in the month, SIAM said.

Sachin Tendulkar: Whether it is while pulling Ishant Sharma for three fours in an over or his handling of the likes of Anil Kumble and Muttiah Muralitharan, Tendulkar has continued his dream-run with the bat this year into the IPL. While continuing to resist the innumerable calls for him to make a return to the T20 fold for India, Tendulkar has aptly demonstrated what the national team is missing out on and is second only to Jacques Kallis in the run-getter's tally.

In addition to his splendid form with the bat - 423 runs from 10 innings at 47 - Tendulkar has also been his ebullient self while captaining Mumbai Indians to the top of the table. And he could well be the leading contender to captain this shadow XI.

Sourav Ganguly: For anyone who saw him bat during the first few games of IPL III, finding the former Indian captain's name among the highest run-getters of the tournament will certainly be as startling as his awful struggles at the crease early on. But true to his nature, Ganguly has risen from the mire to yet again silence his detractors by amassing 333 runs with three half-centuries at the top of the order for KKR, while being at his murderous best against spinners - like his assault against Pragyan Ojha.

Murali Vijay: Faced with the arduous task of holding his own while opening the batting for Chennai alongside the colossal Matthew Hayden, the right-handed Tamil Nadu opener has in fact out-scored his senior partner. Though Yusuf Pathan's 37-ball century has been the fastest so far in the IPL, Vijay's 56-ball 127 against Rajasthan Royals has been the most brutal innings of the tournament. He has smashed 20 sixes in IPL III - second only to Yusuf's 23.

Naman Ojha: While Chennai went onto set a monumental target of 247 - led by Vijay's effort - Rajasthan actually came close to overhauling it, thanks largely to Ojha's unbeaten 55-ball 94. The wicket-keeper batsman has been the mainstay for the Royals at the top of the order and has enhanced his reputation as an attacking stroke-maker. Though all the focus in the Rajasthan batting has been on Yusuf, Ojha has scored the most runs with 352. He has also been adequate while keeping wickets to the likes of Shaun Tait and Shane Warne.

Saurabh Tiwary: The young left-hander has been one of the biggest finds of the IPL this season, having propped up the Mumbai Indians middle-order in the company of Ambati Rayudu. Looked adept at handling both pace and spin - including a couple of straight sixes off Shane Warne - and has also held his nerve commendably to take his team home in a couple of tense run-chases. Tiwary has scored 268 runs from 10 games so far with two half-tons.

Virat Kohli: In a team studded with the who's who of T20 cricket - Jacques Kallis, Ross Taylor and Cameron White to name a few - Kohli has created his own niche in Bangalore Royal Challengers's middle-order. Although the domestic focus has been on team mates Manish Pandey (214 runs at 26.75) and Robin Uthappa (234 at 29.25) - who have had the limelight fixed on them - Kohli has averaged a healthier 34.85 runs/innings, with 244 runs in this edition of the IPL so far.

Pragyan Ojha: With an uncanny knack of breaking partnerships, Ojha has almost single-handedly kept the Deccan Chargers in the reckoning for a semi-final spot. Shouldering the burden of the bowling attack, the left-arm spinner has responded in style by becoming the highest wicket-taker in the current IPL season with 15 scalps, four more than any Indian bowler selected for the World T20 Championships.

Amit Mishra: Foxing the best in the business, Mishra's googly has been unreadable, especially troubling the left-handers (ask Sourav Ganguly). Although Ganguly threw the kitchen sink at the Delhi bowlers in his last match, Mishra was the only one to really trouble the Kolkata skipper - squaring him up regularly with the wrong-un. Apart from containing the flow of runs to near perfection - with a stunning economy rate of 7.28 - Mishra is also the second-highest wicket-taker with 14 dismissals for Delhi.

Anil Kumble: With the best economy rate of this season (an unbelievable 6.30), one would find it hard to believe that the Bangalore skipper is into his second year of international retirement. The nine wickets in ten matches against his name in IPL III is only the tip of the iceberg, as the 20-year experience he brings into the side is worth its weight in gold.

Fast bowlers: Irfan Pathan almost automatically chooses himself due to his abilities with the bat, proving worthy of his all-rounder tag for bottom placed Kings XI Punjab. He is the highest wicket-taker for the team with 11 wickets, which is the same as Zaheer Khan and Vinay Kumar and three scalps more than Praveen Kumar - the quicks in the World T20 side. Irfan has scored 219 runs at an average of 31.28, more than Punjab team mate Yuvraj (213).

The only weak link in the shadow XI lies in the selection of its final pacer, which is a toss-up between Rajasthan's Siddharth Trivedi and Deccan's RP Singh. Trivedi (8 wickets in as many matches) has shot into contention, while RP Singh has also been among the wickets with 9 from 8 appearances.

RIL to invest $1.7 bn in US shale gas

By fe Bureau

In a bid to tap the growing world market for non-conventional energy, Reliance Industries Ltd (RELIANCE.NS : 1124.7 +18.15) (RIL) on Friday said it has picked up 40% stake in US major Atlas Energy Inc. Under the planned deal, RIL will invest $1.7 billion (around Rs 7,558 crore) in Atlas's core Marcellus Shale acreage position. Analysts say, shale gas, which is a natural gas produced from shale a fine-grained sedimentary rock is becoming an increasingly important source of natural gas across the globe. Over the next decade, shale gas is expected to contribute to over 20% of the overall gas production in the US.

Of the $1.7 billion, RIL will pay $339 million in cash at closing, and will fund $1.36 billion of capital costs under a carry arrangement for 75% of Atlas capital costs under an anticipated seven-and-a-half year development programme. Additionally, RIL will invest around $3.4 billion for its share of the development costs over the next ten years.

The transaction is expected to close this month. RIL shares were up 1.78% to close at Rs 1,123.95 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (^BSESN : 17933.14 +218.74) on Friday though the announcement came after market hours.

RIL, the country's largest private sector firm, had cash and cash equivalents of Rs 15,960 crore as of December 31, 2009, and has raised about Rs 9,240 crore by selling treasury stocks in three tranches after September last year. Recently, it made an unsuccessful $14.5-billion bid for Dutch petrochemicals major LyondellBasell.

PMS Prasad, executive director, RIL, said, "Reliance is very pleased to enter one of the fastest growing opportunities emerging in the US unconventional gas business and that too with one of the largest, most experienced energy producers in the Appalachian Basin as partner."

He further said that the joint venture will materially increase Reliance's resources base and provide the company with an entirely new platform from which to grow its exploration and production business while simultaneously enhancing its ability to operate unconventional projects in the future.

The opportunities in shale gas are exciting, according to analysts. Says Deepak Pareek from Angel Broking: "Many oil and gas companies across the globe are acquiring shale gas assets. RIL, which is sitting on a huge cash pile, can deploy the funds to generate further income. Being the only Indian company taking this initiative, RIL will have a technological edge as it can replicate the new technology in its other ventures."

RIL becomes a partner in approximately 300,000 net acres of undeveloped leasehold in the core area of the Marcellus Shale in southwestern Pennsylvania. Low operating costs and proximity to the US northeast gas markets combine to make the Marcellus one of the most economically attractive unconventional natural gas resource plays in North America, RIL said in a media release.

The acreage will support the drilling of over 3,000 wells with a net resource potential of about 13.3 tcfe (5.3 tcfe net to Reliance). While Atlas will serve as the development operator for the joint venture, RIL is expected to begin acting as development operator in certain regions in the coming years as part of the joint venture.

Under the framework of the joint venture, Atlas will continue acquiring leasehold in the Marcellus region and RIL will have the option to acquire 40% share in all new acreages. RIL also obtains the right of first offer with respect to potential future sales by Atlas of around 280,000 additional Appalachian acres currently controlled by Atlas. While Barclays Capital Inc acted as exclusive financial advisor to RIL for the transaction, Vinson & Elkins LLP acted as legal counsel. Bank of America Merrill Lynch provided strategic and financial advice to RIL.

Tata Tea in JV with PepsiCo for health drink

By fe Bureau

Tata Tea (TATATEA.NS : 1001.3 +27.8), part of the Rs 3.25-lakh crore ($70.8-billion) Tata group, said on Friday it signed a preliminary agreement with beverages major PepsiCo to explore a joint venture in the non-carbonated beverages market, focusing on health and enhanced wellness.

Analysts say the diversification move by Tata Tea has been necessitated by lacklustre growth in the demand of its core business of tea, which posted an anemic, under 1% growth every year between 2003 and 2008. The tea segment is expected to grow around the same rate up to 2013, according to Crisil estimates.

For PepsiCo, there is much riding on this partnership with the world's second largest packaged tea maker after Unilever, as its chairman & CEO Indra Nooyi pushes to broaden the cola major's portfolio to include more healthier snack and beverages options.

The proposed venture, if and when it materialises, will join the ranks of similar global alliances in Beverage Partners Worldwide--Coca-Cola Company's JV with Swiss food major Nestle to sell tea drinks--and Pepsi Lipton International, the world's second biggest cola maker's venture with Unilever to hawk ice-tea. In India though, the Pepsi-Hindustan Unilever partnership for Lipton has been a kind of a non-starter.

In a media release, Tata Tea said its board "has approved a non-binding memorandum of understanding with PepsiCo Inc, with the intention of exploring the formation of a joint venture in the area of non-carbonated ready-to-drink beverages, focused on health and enhanced wellness."

The details of the JV were not disclosed and will be available only when the definitive agreements are finalised and executed.

The transaction will be subject to corporate and statutory approvals as may be required, the company said. Tata Tea shares rose 2.83% on the BSE (^BSESN : 17933.14 +218.74) on Friday to close at Rs 1,000.05.

The latest move is in step with Tata Tea's avowed objective of becoming a global beverage company, a journey it has embarked in 2000 with the acquisition of UK's Tetley. A string of global acquisitions quickly followed Tetley--Good Earth herbal tea and Eight O'Clock Coffee in the US and South African tea maker Joekels in mid-2000s.

In 2007, Tata Tea, along with parent Tata Sons, acquired a 30% stake in Glaceau, a US vitamin water maker, for $677 million (over Rs 3,000 crore) to enter the wellness market, but had to sell out its stake to Coca-Cola a year later for $1.2 billion (over Rs 4,900 crore) as part of a $ 4.2-billion buyout of Glaceau by Coke.

On Friday, Tata Tea said, "The proposed JV is not intended to conflict with any existing arrangements of either party." The definitive agreements for the proposed JV could be finalised over the next few months. Tata Tea's operations span the entire value chain in tea, including research and development, tea cultivation, manufacture of black and instant tea, blending, packaging, branding, marketing, and sales and distribution. PepsiCo, which entered India in 1989, has 41 beverage bottling plants in India and three food plants. Globally, it has 19 different brands generating over one billion dollar in annual sales each. Apart from its carbonated drinks, PepsiCo markets Tropicana and Nimbooz.

Obama to hold bipartisan meeting on financial reform

By Jeff Mason

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama will hold a meeting with congressional Republicans and Democrats on Wednesday to discuss proposals to overhaul financial regulation, a White House official said on Friday.

"Enacting financial reform has been a goal of President Obama's since well before taking office, and he will discuss the choice he sees in this debate -- whether to stand with the American people or stand on the side of the status quo," the official said.

Obama has made passage of financial regulatory reform legislation a high priority after achieving his top domestic policy goal of overhauling the U.S. healthcare system.

"We believe momentum is on the side of real reform for the American people and consumers," the official said, noting that the president had called during his State of the Union address for regular meetings with bipartisan members of Congress.

Obama proposed a series of changes to the rules that govern the financial industry in mid-2009. The House of Representatives approved most of them in December, but the Senate has yet to act, with many Republicans and lobbyists for banks and Wall Street fighting to block reforms.

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd, a Democrat, has said he hopes his bill on the matter will be debated on the Senate floor later this month.

Dodd says his bill ends the idea that some financial firms are 'too big to fail,' creates a strong consumer protection watchdog and addresses problems in the over-the-counter derivative markets, credit rating agencies and debt securitization, among other issues.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Republicans would likely be able to find common ground with Democrats on the issue of 'too big to fail' financial institutions.

"On financial reform, to the extent that we can target it at 'too big to fail,' I think we can potentially get an agreement," McConnell said, according to a spokesman.

Obama held a bipartisan meeting on healthcare earlier this year after an election in Massachusetts took away Democrats' "supermajority" in the Senate, which was seen at the time as a potentially deadly blow to the president's signature issue.

The summit did not create bipartisan support for the bill, which was passed later without a single Republican vote, but it succeeded in bringing momentum back to Obama's side.

The Wednesday meeting on financial regulation will follow a major international summit on nuclear proliferation that Obama will host in Washington at the beginning of the week.

G20 unlikely to discuss yuan in April - Brazil source

By Ana Nicolaci da Costa

BRASILIA (Reuters) - The Chinese yuan is unlikely to be formally discussed at a Group of 20 finance ministers meeting in April but could well be talked about on the sidelines, a Brazilian government source with knowledge of the negotiations said on Friday.

China has been under pressure from the United States and other countries to let its currency strengthen. Speculation that Beijing might soon unveil a long-awaited shift in its exchange-rate regime has intensified in recent days, helping to push the yuan higher.

"The expectation is that at the G20 no one will be pointing fingers at China," the source told Reuters ahead of the meetings in Washington on April 22-23.

"On the sidelines, it is possible" that the yuan will be discussed," the source added. "But I don't know if Brazil will put pressure."

The comments come as Brazilian Finance Minister Guido Mantega said a flexible currency policy in China "would be very good" for the global economy.

Brazilian officials became more vocal about their position on the Chinese currency at the end of last year when a sharp rally in the local currency, the real , was making Brazilian exports less competitive.

BRIC SUMMIT

Before the G20 event, Brazilian and Chinese officials will meet next week in Brasilia for a summit of the BRIC group of emerging economies, which includes Brazil, Russia, China and India.

Trade in local currency between the BRIC countries is on the agenda for that summit, the source said. Last year, the Chinese and Brazilian central banks said their countries were working on an arrangement to allow exporters and importers to settle deals in local currency, bypassing the U.S. dollar.

"I know they are taking this idea forward," the source said. "This time they will look at concrete mechanisms," the source, added without providing details.

The BRICs, a term coined by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O'Neill in 2001 to describe the growing power of emerging market economies, represent 40 percent of the world population and around 20 percent of the global economy.

Wall St Week Ahead: Stocks face earnings rush after strong week

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stock investors will watch the earnings numbers flow in next week to see how much momentum the rally can get from early profit reports.

The first-quarter figures come as the three major U.S. stock indexes finished a sixth straight week of gains, the best string since the rebound from 12 1/2-year lows in March 2009, and the Dow briefly popped above 11,000 late on Friday.

Those gains could make it tough for stocks to rally further, even with expectations, according to Thomson Reuters, for Standard & Poor's 500 companies' first-quarter earnings to rise 36.8 percent from a year ago.

The earnings period kicks off with results from Dow component Alcoa Inc after the bell on Monday.

Besides Alcoa, results are expected next week from top tech companies Intel and Google, as well as from General Electric and JPMorgan Chase & Co.

"The reaction to some of these earnings is going to be really important. If you don't get the setback, and it trades higher, I think you're going to squeeze another wave of buyers into the market," said Nick Kalivas, vice president of financial research & senior equity index analyst, at MF Global in Chicago.

While earnings are expected to be the focus, next week also brings the Consumer Price Index, March retail sales, industrial production, housing starts and consumer sentiment reports, which will help investors gauge the speed of the economic recovery.

Other events likely to spark attention next week: Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke testifies on the economic outlook before the Joint Economic Committee, while investors will watch for signs of change in Greece's debt crisis.

On Friday, the Fitch credit rating agency downgraded Greek sovereign debt two notches to BBB-, leaving Greece's debt just one grade above junk status.

TACKING UP AND BACK

For the week, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.6 percent, the S&P 500 gained 1.4 percent and the Nasdaq increased 2.1 percent.

"The stock market has had a very significant rise off the (February) lows," said Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist at RDM Financial in Westport, Connecticut.

"I wouldn't be surprised to see some near-term pullback within the context of a rising stock market," he said.

Much stronger-than-expected earnings have helped propel the S&P 500 up more than 75 percent from the March 9, 2009, closing lows. But in the last earnings season, stocks actually lost about 3 percent as investors sold equities despite strong results.

Some 72 percent of companies beat earnings estimates in the fourth quarter, down from a record 79 percent in the previous quarter, but still well above the 61 percent in a typical quarter, Thomson Reuters data showed.

Technical indicators point to overbought conditions heading into next week's earnings, which could mean a pullback is in store, some analysts say.

"Short-term momentum for the Dow has been deteriorating since March 23 after reaching an overbought condition," said Chris Burba, short-term market technician at Standard & Poor's.

The Dow briefly rose just above 11,000 moments before Friday's closing bell, but ended at 10,997.35, while the S&P 500 neared the 1,200 mark. Both levels represent technical resistance, Burba said.

BERNANKE AND THE ECONOMY

Bernanke is scheduled to speak on Wednesday to a congressional panel called the Joint Economic Committee. Although data continues to show economic improvement, the Fed has reiterated its commitment to keep benchmark interest rates near zero.

Also on Wednesday's agenda: the U.S. Consumer Price Index and the government's data on retail sales, both for March.

The overall CPI is pegged to rise 0.1 percent in March from a flat reading in February, while core CPI, excluding volatile food and energy prices, is also seen up 0.1 percent, matching the previous month's gain, according to economists polled by Reuters.

Retail sales are forecast to rise 1.2 percent in March from the previous month, and minus autos, sales are expected to gain 0.5 percent from February, according to economists polled by Reuters.

Thursday's industrial output is forecast to show a gain of 0.7 percent in March from the previous month.

March housing starts, due on Friday, are expected to rise to a seasonally adjusted annual pace of 610,000 from 575,000 in the previous month. Friday's Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers report is expected to show the preliminary index on consumer sentiment at 75 for April. The index ended March at 73.6.

12.5 Agarkar to Dravid, 1 run, full on off, crunched to sweeper cover
12.4 Agarkar to Dravid, SIX!!, Unbelievable hit! it was a half volley on off, Dravid knelt down, scooped it over sweeper cover, the man leapt high, but went over his head, some timing on that and Agarkar has that world famous innocent look on his face
12.3 Agarkar to Dravid, SIX!!, fabulous shot! it was a length delivery on the stumps, Dravid backs away and just slammed it over long on, was the right length to free his arms and Dravid certainly did, top shot!
12.2 Agarkar to Uthappa, 1 run, drifts down the leg side, Uthappa flicks it away to fine leg, straight to the fielder
12.1 Agarkar to Dravid, 1 run, back of a length delivery outside off, Dravid slaps it straight to extra cover, the fielder could not prevent the single though!

Background and personal life

Lalit Modi was born into a wealthy and successful business family. His father, Krishan Kumar Modi, is Chairman of Modi Enterprises, a 40 billion Rs business empire which was founded by his grandfather, Raj Bahadur Gujarmal Modi[5](Founder of town Modinagar). He attended schools in Shimla and Nainital. He disliked school, and often ran away. After his schooling, he was determined to continue with his studies in the United States. He scored well in the SAT (essential for gaining entrance to a US college or university), and chose to skip the school-leaving examination, which was required for entrance to colleges and universities in India. Subsequently, he gained a place at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, United States.[6] He is married to Minal and has had two children with her Ruchir and Aliya. His son Ruchir currently lives in Mumbai with him and is studying at the American School of Bombay. Aliya currently lives in Switzerland and is currently studying there. Minal's daughter from her previous marrage Karima is married and living in London now. He has a grand daughter from Karima, Arya who is 1 year old.

Career

While studying at Pace University and Duke University between 1983 and 1986, he spent some time at Philip Morris in 1985 and Estée Lauder in 1986. He was President of International Tobacco Company from 1987 to 1991, and then in 1992 was appointed an Executive Director of Godfrey Phillips India.[7] At around the same time, he started to work on initiatives in the entertainment industry. He worked on a joint venture with Disney, distributing ESPN (then owned by Disney) in India, and persuading ESPN to start showing cricket matches.[6] He put forward proposals for a "limited over" cricket league which he believed would be more television-friendly, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) turned them down. Frustrated, he decided to obtain a place on the board of the BCCI in order to influence it from the inside. He obtained membership of the Rajasthan Cricket Association by concealing his last name. He eventually became president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association, which gave him a seat on the BCCI. In 2005, Modi figured in a power struggle that resulted in Sharad Pawar, an influential politician and national cabinet minister, ousting former Indian cricket supremo and International Cricket Council chief Jagmohan Dalmiya in BCCI elections. Modi was then appointed Vice-President of the BCCI. Heavily involved in the commercial side of the Board's activities, he is reported to have increased their revenues sevenfold between 2005 and 2008, with the BCCI then reporting annual revenues of over 1 billion USD.[8] Finally, in 2008, he launched the Indian Premier League (IPL), a league based around Twenty20 cricket, where each team is limited to batting for a maximum of 20 overs.

Controversy

As a student at Duke University, USA in 1985, Modi was convicted for possessing 400 grams of cocaine and charged with assault and kidnapping. Modi pleaded guilty to the crime when the case was heard in the Durham County court, North Carolina and later entered a plea bargain, which resulted in a suspended two year prison sentence.[9]

Security threats to Lalit Modi

Towards the end of March 2009 the Mumbai police were interrogating underworld don Chota Shakeel's arrested hit man Rashid Malabari and during the interrogation he had revealed that there were planning to assassinate cricket chief Lalit Modi, his wife Minal and son Ruchir. This was cross referenced by an government intelligence agency picked up a phone conversation between Chota Shakeel and his boss Dawood Ibrahim instructing him to hire 4 assassins to assassinate Modi and his family either in South Africa or in India. Currently Modi is under constant threat and has three layers of security cordon around him 24*7 and travels around in a bullet proof car.

$975m ESPN deal

The Economic Times quoted:

"

Cricket economics has once again hit the roof. Sports broadcaster ESPN Star Sports (ESS) has paid a staggering $975 million for exclusive global commercial rights for the Twenty20 Champions League for a 10-year period, starting with the inaugural tournament between October 8–23 this year (2009).

The deal, which gives ESS rights for all T20 Champions League seasons until 2017, makes it the highest cricket tournament by value on a per game basis. Earlier this year, the World Sports Group-Sony Entertainment consortium had paid BCCI $918 million for 10-year global rights for the India Premier League (IPL).

Apart from ESS, bids were received from Abu Dhabi Sports Club and Dubai International Capital (DIC). While the DIC bid was for $751.3 million, Abu Dhabi Sports Club's bid, being a conditional one, was disqualified. ESS had bid $900 million for the deal and an additional $75 million for marketing.

Twenty20 Champions League, modelled after the football champions league, would feature the best teams of the domestic Twenty20 tournaments in various countries. It is being jointly organised by the Indian, Australian and South African cricket boards. The inaugural league, with $6-million prize money, will feature eight teams — two each from India, Australia and South Africa and the champions from the England and Pakistan domestic leagues. The prize money will be shared between the teams and their playrs.

"This deal will cement our relationship with BCCI, Cricket Australia and Cricket South Africa and we are committed to setting new benchmarks in broadcast and distribution," ESS MD Manu Sawhney said in a statement. IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi said: "We believe this is the best commercial deal for Champions League."

Tax Payer

As of October 31, 2009 Indian Premier League chief, Lalit Modi has claimed the top slot as the highest tax payer in the country for the current fiscal. He has already paid Rs 8 crore in the first half of the current fiscal.[14]

Awards and recognitions

In March 2008, he was listed among India's 30 most powerful people by the India Today magazine.[15]
Fast Company awarded the Indian Premier League, a national cricket league, in its Most Innovative Companies 2010 award and credited Lalit Modi for adopting a sped-up version of the game called Twenty20, which cuts matches from multiple days to a more TV-friendly three hours with great commercial success.[16]
