the annexed article by Sukharanjan Sengupta published in Doinik Statesman of 10 January 2010 is a recap of the last days of some ex-chief ministers of West Bengal.A quick snapshot :Dr Prafulla Chandra Ghosh - was admitted to Calcutta Medical College hospital in 1981, refused assistance offered by G D Birla. passed away in 1983, in his foster daughter's presence, in a slum in Ultadanga.Prafulla Sen - did not have a residence to call his own although communists of all hues had once accused him of having surreptitiously acquired Stephen House, a coveted property in Calcutta's business district. died unsung in 1990. Jyoti 'Ceausescu' Basu's government did not have the courtesy of publishing the subsequent (to the death of an ex-cm) issue of the official gazette as a 'black bordered' one, as is the norm.Ajoy Mukherjee - did not have a residence subsequent to his giving up his position.suffered from loss of memory and was found stranded,in 1986, in front of Basusree cinema. was then admitted to PG hospital where he breathed his last within a few days.why must lakhs be expended to prop up our homegrown ceausescu and that too in a private nursing home?soumya guhathakurta
