Heritage Sites in Maharashtra
New Delhi: January 19, 2010
Structural conservation, chemical preservation, environmental development and maintenance of centrally protected monuments are attended to by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) regularly. Yearly programmes are drawn up for it and implemented by the 24 circles and 5 Regional Directors of ASI spread across the country. A list of the ASI protected Forts / Palaces in Maharashtra alongwith the funds allocated for their conservation and maintenance during the current financial year (2009-10) is given at the Annexure.
Rajmata Jijau's historical palace at Pachad near Raigarh Fort is a centrally protected monument under the jurisdiction of Mumbai Circle of ASI. During 2006, a portion of wall of one of the structures situated inside the wada had collapsed and was reconstructed as per original. During 2008, a small portion of northern and southern arms of the fortification wall of the monument had fallen which were also reconstructed as per original.
An expenditure of Rs.18.36 lakhs has been incurred, during past 3 years, on the conservation of the monument.

The Government of India provides financial assistance to the States to check mayhem caused by wild animals, mainly wild elephants. Aerial survey for exploration of minerals
New Delhi: January 19, 2010
Aerial surveys are carried out to explore for minerals in the country, including backward and rural areas. The Government of India has conveyed prior approval for grant of Reconnaissance Permits (RP) in mineral rich States of India for exploration of minerals. During reconnaissance prospecting, aerial geophysical, ground geophysical, geochemical and geological surveys have been undertaken which are followed by drilling at suitable locations. So far, a total of 339 RPs have been issued covering an areas of 4,66,556 sq. km, out of which aerial surveys have been conducted in 27 RPs.

Besides the above, the Airborne Mineral Survey and Exploration (AMSE) Wing of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has, since its inception in 1965, carried out aerial surveys. The GSI has been reconstituted into five Missions namely Baseline Geosciences Data Generation, Natural Resources Assessment, Geoinformatics, Fundamental and Multidisciplinary Geoscience and Special studies, Training & capacity building. GSI has been equipped with a new heliborne system costing Rs. 52 crores (including helicopter and sensors) for airborne survey and a new deep sea vessel costing Rs. 448 crores is being procured with latest state of the art technology for marine survey in offshore areas. This will reposition GSI to help discover and exploit our offshore mineral resources. A total area of 4,21,917 sq.km. has been flown in geologically favourable zones for targeting mineral resources which include rural and backward areas. Cooperation between India and China instrumental in strengthening bilateral relations: Anand Sharma

Shri Anand Sharma, Minister of Commerce & Industry, during his meeting with the Party Secretary of Shanghai Mr. Yu Zhengsheng last evening, has said that cooperation between Chinese & Indian companies is instrumental in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. The Minister further mentioned that in 2010 India and China will celebrate 60th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He also said that "India attaches high importance to its participation in the Shanghai World Expo at which we will showcase not only its progress in science & technology but also our rich and diverse cultural heritage". Mr. Tang Dengjie, Vice Mayor of Shanghai; Mr. Sha Hailin, Deputy Secretary General of Shanghai Municipal Government & Chairman of Shanghai Municipal Chamber of Commerce; and Mr. Chen Kehong, Chairman of Shanghai Municipal Science & Technology Commission were present from the Chinese side.
Both Shri Sharma and Mr. Yu Zhengsheng exchanged views about how India and China were coping with the global economic crisis and spoke about both countries being engines of economic growth that was helping the world come out of global economic crisis. The Minister said that China is an important economic partner for India's development particularly in the infrastructure sector and added that there are enormous opportunities for Chinese companies in this sector.
Mr. Yu Zhengsheng expressed confidence that Indian pavilion will be one of the highlights of the Expo and it will provide an excellent opportunity for Chinese People to enhance their understanding about India. He spoke about business opportunities for Chinese companies in India and also assured full support for Indian business operations in Shanghai.

Exports to Latin American and African countries

India's exports to the Latin America region increased from US $ 2.16 billion in 2004-05 to US $ 6.01 billion in 2008-2009, registering a growth of about 178%. Likewise, India's exports to Africa region increased from US $ 5.6 billion in 2004-05 to US $ 14.57 billion in 2008-2009 registering a growth of about 160%.
With a view to enhancing our exports to Latin America and Africa region, process for expansion of the existing India-Chile Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) and India-MERCOSUR (trade bloc of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay) Trade Agreement have been initiated. Besides, India has commenced negotiations for a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) with South Africa Customs Union (SACU) comprising of Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland. In addition to this, FOCUS: LAC and FOCUS: Africa Programme of Government are in force for supporting and encouraging Indian exporters / companies to explore new markets of these regions.

Preservation of Buddhist Relics
New Delhi: January 19, 2010
Two sets of a Buddhist relic caskets, made of Khondalite stone, and designed in the form of votive stupas, were excavated from Lalitagiri District Cuttack, Orissa. Besides, apsidal chaityagriha, votive stupas, Buddhist images were also discovered. These relic caskets have been preserved and kept in the custody of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), Bhubaneswar Circle, Bhubneshwar.
ASI has decided to construct a site-museum at Lalitagiri for the preservation and display of the Buddhist-relics.

Pawan Hans pays Rs.2.45 crores worth dividend to ONGC
New Delhi: January 19, 2010
Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd. (PHHL) has given dividend cheque aggregating Rs.2.45 crores to the Oil & Natural Gas (ONGC) towards dividend payments for the year 2008-09.
Pawan Hans has an Equity Capital of Rs. 113.76 crores of which the Government of India own Rs. 89.26 crores (78.5%); ONGC Rs. 24.50 crores (21.5%). It has been paying dividend to the Government of India and ONGC since last 17 years. Against the ONGC's equity share of Rs. 24.50 crores, PHHL has till date paid Rs. 45 crores to ONGC as dividend. This includes the Rs.245 crore paid for 2008-09.

People living in slums

The Government has launched the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in December 2005. The Sub-Mission on Basic Services to the Urban Poor (BSUP) and Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP) under the JNNURM provide Additional Central Assistance to States/Union Territories for housing and related basic infrastructure facilities to the urban poor, including slum-dwellers. While BSUP is implemented in 65 Mission cities, small and medium towns are covered under IHSDP. The Government has also launched new scheme called Affordable Housing in Partnership in 2009 for the construction of 1 million houses for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS)/Low Income Group (LIG)/Middle Income Group (MIG) with at least 25% for EWS category. The scheme aims at partnership between various agencies: Central and State Governments, Parastatals, Urban Local Bodies, Developers etc. In addition, the Government has announced the launching of a new scheme called Rajiv Awas Yojana for the slum dwellers and the urban poor. The scheme would extend support to States that are willing to assign property rights to people living in slum areas. The Government's effort would be to create Slum-free India through the implementation of Rajiv Awas Yojana.
The Government has suggested to the State Governments to converge BSUP and IHSDP with the scheme of Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY) which has been revised with effect from 1st April, 2009. The revised Scheme of SJSRY has the following five major components, namely-
(i) Urban Self Employment Programme (USEP)
(ii) Urban Women Self-help Programme (UWSP)
(iii) Skill Training for Employment Promotion amongst Urban Poor (STEP-UP)
(iv) Urban Wage Employment Programme (UWEP) (Applicable to Towns with less than 5 lakhs population as per 1991 Census)
(v) Urban Community Development Network (UCDN)
The Guidelines of the revised SJSRY scheme have been circulated to the State Governments and have been adopted. The Sanctioning Committee at the Central level for BSUP and IHSDP has made suggestions to States to ensure the convergence between BSUP and IHSDP and SJSRY, to the extent possible. State Governments have taken preparatory steps to implement the revised SJSRY Guidelines, especially those related to self-employment, wage-employment and skill development programmes for the urban poor, including beneficiaries under BSUP and IHSDP.

Measures for sustainable development of ground water

The Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) under the Ministry of Water Resources has examined different reports on ground water situation in the country and after taking into account their own studies, they have stated that in some areas of the country trends of over-exploitation of ground water resources have been observed.
The steps taken by the Government to ensure sustainable development of ground water in the country include -implementation of demonstrative artificial recharge projects by CGWB in the country;. implementation of scheme on "Artificial Recharge to ground water through Dug wells" for augmenting the ground water resources in 7 States namely, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat & Madhya Pradesh.; implementation of scheme for Repair, Renovation and Restoration of water bodies. (The objectives of the scheme cover augmentation of ground water recharge); and implementation of Farmers Participatory Action Research Programme aimed at creating awareness about water conservation practices.
The steps taken also include the circulation of 'Model Bill' to enable States/Union Territories to enact suitable legislation for regulation and control of ground water development; setting up of Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) for the purpose of regulation of ground water management and development in the country; and Organization of mass awareness programmes on Water Management, Rain Water Harvesting and Artificial Recharge of Ground Water.
The Government has advised the States for making rainwater harvesting mandatory.
